you will be sedated so it's not too bad. i've never had one but i worked for a company that made the cameras. we used to have to watch procedures all the time. people would fart a lot during them because they pump air into you to expand the colon

Where do I begin... I was diagnosed with IBS about a year ago because that was the first time I really started to feel the abdominal pains. I didn't ever know what was wrong with me. I now cannot have a BM without taking a medication. I have gained about 8 pounds in the last 5 months all in my abdominal area due to bloating, and I feel so self-conscious. I am miserable. I did get a colonoscopy, and I was diagnosed with a ‘beautiful colon.’ Nothing is helping me. I'm at my wit’s end here. I am looking for any help. I want to be myself again. I am sleepy all of the time, my face is breaking out, and my stomach hurts constantly. It has personally and professionally affected my life.

Another way of colon cleansing is colonic irrigation. I'm a huge believer in this procedure, and it is far more effective than enemas. However, colonics are not thorough, as they only remove the softer, surface plaque which becomes loosened during the colonic procedure. Also, colonics can be very expensive and many are required to be effective, even for this superficial clean out. What would be far better is colonics combined with a good colon cleanse program.

I got one at 50; now that I'm 60, I've got my 2nd one scheduled for next month. It's kind of a minor family tradition now to go out for a big breakfast afterwards, looking forward to that.
― that's when I reach for my copy of Revolver (WmC), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 21:57 (two years ago)
I felt nice and mellow afterwards, not drugged but just fewer thoughts and anxieties than usual.
It was weird not to be hungry when not eating for two days; it made me aware of when I eat out of habit or whatever else. The prep solution had electrolytes, and I also had clear coconut water and unflavored Bubly (also with electrolytes), and that seemed to keep me sated.
This was only my third procedure ever (other two were an appendix removal and a detached retina), and I was aware again how hospitality is even more of a concept in hospitals than hotels. Everyone was so calming. As with the other two procedures, it was good to know that they're doing many of these each week and that there's no mystery and not much variety.
― paisley got boring (Eazy), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 22:02 (two years ago)
yeah i always feel remarkably safe waiting in the pre-op room with an IV drip and three bajillion monitors stickered to my body. it's a real blessing. warm blankets too.
also the plastic-y saline smell from the IV is burned into my mind. it's weird because it's a smell experienced from traces of chemicals in the bloodstream and not from an external source.
― c u (crüt), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 22:28 (two years ago)
It's that time again, dreading the prep drinking and not eating, but looking forward to the post-procedure meal.

I had my first colonoscopy last week. I'm 44 -- I meant to do it about 8 years ago (because my bro has had polyps) but put it off out of a combination of anxiety, Covid, and procrastination. Also, I live in Europe and the norm in my country is zero sedation, so I had to pay out of pocket to have it done at a clinic. (My wife -- who has given birth twice and undergone root canals with no lidocaine -- described the non-sedation procedure as a 9 out of 10 in terms of discomfort.) The prep was tough for me: not the medication itself (it was fine -- tasted slightly like coconut water) but during the 2.5-day liquid diet I realized how much of my typical day includes snacking. I didn't mind the hunger so much as the lack of security-blanket endorphins I usually get from mindlessly munching on almonds, say, or a bowl of cereal.
Anyway, the procedure was all clear. I'm glad I had it done.
― Sam Weller, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 13:20 (one month ago)
Timely! I'm having my second one on Friday! Good for you. I have a cousin in her early 30s who is fighting SECOND time stage 3 colon cancer, just horribly sad how much cancer has already taken from her life (her fertility, for one huge tragic thing). Get it done as soon as you can, everyone.
I very much hope I figure out how to ingest the prep more effectively this time. I could handle the fasting (it helps if you have a few lighter meals before your fast, not, say, a steak and red wine) but staying up all night to continue drinking that stuff to the point where I started vomiting it back up...the sleeplessness and the sickness really got me down. Probably also the starvation, now that I think of it. Crying alone at 4am is not how I want this to go.

Ask if you can do miralax and gatorade instead of the usual prep stuff. It’s much easier on your stomach. My wife did the prep stuff the first time and she was barfing and shitting all at once. The next time she requested the miralax/gatorade and it was much easier on her stomach and didn’t taste horrible.
― Cow_Art, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 14:19 (one month ago)
I have been thinking I prob should start doing this annually, my granddad had colon cancer and my dad has done an annual test for a long time. Can't say this thread has boosted my enthusiasm tho, lol, doesn't sound a nice prep for it. But obviously that's not the important part.
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 14:22 (one month ago)
i did one a few years ago. i should probably do another one soon. my first physical in forever is coming up next month.
― map, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 17:13 (one month ago)
I sort of want to start a routine of annual health stuff, been trying to generally have a more honest relationship with myself about the future rather than burying even the tiniest worrying thing! I have taken some steps for this but still a work in progress.
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 17:20 (one month ago)
I've said before that I was in the recovery area with another woman who had also just had it and I heard them telling her that she wasn't cleaned out enough so they couldn't see what they needed to see and she had to do it all over again. I wasn't aware that was a possibility but new fear unlocked.
Might just taper off foods early/eat vegetarian & lightly, do the miralax, and not try so hard to drink the full volume of prep. When you think about it, every person's body can't accommodate the same amount of liquid and they must size those things for the largest bodied person.
xp right on, guys. I'm doing the same plus vowing to get dental stuff this year.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 3 March 2026 17:23 (one month ago)
I'm glad it's not just me, dentist haunted me for years also, but I have finally done it. I know it's so pathetic but I genuinely had to talk to a therapist about just living in a sort of bulletproof ignore all negativity way. I guess just have felt permanently 28 even tho I'm 43 soon.
Had similar issues with money and stuff also, like fear of future stopped me planning or being smart. None of this engrained shit changes overnight but little by little I've changed, and it feels a lot more calm to just face simple stuff like this.
― LocalGarda, Tuesday, 3 March 2026 17:28 (one month ago)
My secret weapon in the "no solid foods" period is a light but pleasantly salty/savory broth made with Better Than Bouillon paste. That stuff is delicious.
xp real fist bump territory, LG. I have often lacked health insurance so just suffered through stuff instead of seeking care, at the same time as the system has gotten so much worse during my adult life. (I used to be able to get actual dental procedures done and then somewhere along the line I figured out I'm now paying for insurance that ONLY covers preventative visits???)
Also maybe it's PTSD from my accident but going alone to things makes me cry and yet...I haven't steeled myself to ask anyone to go with me on Fri, even though the hospital says they won't release you alone? But they also only take appointments for WEEK DAYS? Who I am supposed to get?!?! The doctor called me back (a miracle, honestly) and said they'd consider releasing me if I took a CAB HOME? FROM MANHATTAN? I said "I don't know what you think this is but I'll be getting the subway just like normal." We don't have Uber from Kips Bay to Bed-Stuy money, or at least not that I'm going to use for this.
Vision is the same -- I used to have a good insurance package that covered glasses and exams and contacts and now...it's all out of pocket and even the exams have additional fees attached if you want to get everything checked??! Like different diagnostic machines that measure whether you'll continue to have functioning eyeballs now cost EXTRA??
I'm so mad.
― Ima Gardener (in orbit), Tuesday, 3 March 2026 17:38 (one month ago)
The amount of times I've used two part epoxy to glue this crown back on is....idk if it's inspiring or embarrassing. A good epoxy'll last about a year in my experience. The only bad part is the installation where you have to clamp down on the rapidly hardening plastic as it sets up. It tastes and feels kinda gross.
I think I'm gonna show up at the doc alone and let them figure out that they can't make me sit in their lobby indefinitely. He said I should at least bring my first meal with me and sit for an hour. Idk man I plan to take myself out for a cheeseburger and fries to be perfectly honest with you.

I have a broken tooth and I prob mentioned this elsewhere but after I finally went to the dentist and got the all clear on the rest of my teeth, he sent me to get it pulled out. It's at the back so I chose this as the cheapest option as who cares, nobody can see it etc. The dentist he sent me to asked if it was sore, which it isn't, been broken for a decade, then x-rayed and advised to just keep it and get a filling. Original dentist disagreed.
I haven't been back since but it felt like the gods conspiring against me, like don't make me decide this cos idk.
For the rest of my health having chronic illness half my life kinda made me just think "fuck it, it's fine" about anything and everything. That's actually a good strategy, ignoring your body, if you have chronic illness. But you can't live your whole life that way so been trying to be less oppositional and more open to learning, which has required building a bit more faith in incremental small improvements to my chronic stuff also.
Idk this shit can be so engrained but we owe it to ourselves to find a way forward.

I’m not sure how other people‘s bodies respond to the prep process but I just followed instructions (7 day before: no blood thinning medications/pain relievers; 3 days before: low fiber food; 2 days before: last meal at 7 PM; 1 day before: clear liquid diet, evening SUPREP; morning of: morning SUPREP, stop liquids 3 hours before appointment, afternoon colonoscopy) and I was fine.
― our beloved RIFF LORD (DJP), Tuesday, 3 March 2026 18:00 (one month ago)
That sounds so nice and reasonable. :) My visit was in the morning and the schedule that I was given for the prep called for certain measurements of it to be drunk by certain time intervals, two of which were in the middle of the night/required me to either stay up or get up. And I just couldn't get it all down and I felt like I couldn't go back to sleep until I finished it. I'm going to try to be less dramatic this time. <3

I must ask my dad cos I know he has done one annually for years, prob due to the fear he would feel after his dad died relatively young, maybe in his early 70s. He never seemed to mention it was uncomfortable but he also never mentions it at all. That said I know if I brought it up he would be really happy to discuss it. He's often surprised me, sometimes amusingly, with how much he makes it feel normal and important to talk about men's health. Starting about fifteen years ago when he phoned me with ridiculously huge enthusiasm to discuss me having a pile for the first time after I'd seen a doctor about it and told my mum :D

Haha. Exactly the same tho with parents. That said as I posted that anecdote I wondered for the first time since the fifteen years ago whether the reason my dad was effusively phoning was also a reaction to fearing a minor thing the same way I did, on my behalf, and being relieved it was fine. The perspective on these things changes so much as we get older.
