I hate being a tall man in a small world

I must say that I wish I was a bit shorter. When you are 6'6", you have a tendancy to get noticed. I don't like being stared at, or examined, because it makes me want to yell obscenities... or maybe it's that I just don't like the puzzled look I detect in so many people's faces when they're studying me. I despise being asked if I play basketball, and I hate the subconscious assumption that if you are tall, you are naturally superior in EVERY physical aspect, and if you fall short of this you're a freak of nature, or even more of a freak of nature than being extra tall makes you. People expect you to either be a greek olympian or an all-powerful ox. I hate dealing with short people who have Napoleon complexes and feel the need to prove something when dealing with me. I can only argue so long before I feel like breaking a bottle over their head. I hate getting kicked in the head constantly by crowd surfers at concerts, and banging my head when getting into buses or going through doorways. I have so few brain cells as it is! I hate never knowing if a girl is looking at me because she thinks I'm cute, or because she thinks I'm tall, menacing, and disturbing-looking... and god help me, I've met a lot of women who argue both sides of that one! I'm confused by the fact that I can never find a girl my height, and the ones closest in height don't seem interested in a taller guy... but I have no trouble attracting girls in the 4'11" to 5'4" range. I hate that I have big feet holding up my big body, and they don't even fit properly on 99% of the stairs that exist in this world, so I have to use my tippy toes, and pray I don't land on my ass when climbing stairs drunk. I hate that all my clothing seems too small, even though I bought the largest size shirts or pant lengths, and I don't even use a dryer anymore for my clothes I just air dry it after washing it in cold water and it still looks TOO FUCKING SMALL... my sleeves go up to my elbows, my pants crawl up my ankles when I sit.... it's like a horrible joke. And sorry, I'm not rich enough to get new clothes every three weeks. I go to big and tall stores and most of the shit makes me look like I'm a forty year old man with a 15 year old's head... I admire people with medium size bodies who can go to a thrift store and find shit that fits them fine, and god forbid, might even be a bit BIG on them! I hate that I feel like a giant when I try and sit in airplane seats, or college desks, or the backseat of cars. This world was not designed for me, and I'm not rich enough to spend money trying to redesign it for myself.

Wow, I feel better. Hate is such a strong word, and I try not to use it, but this one's been building a while. I know, it could be worse. I could be six foot SEVEN.

i thought i was a short person in a tall persons world.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 12 April 2003 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it's just an average person's world so we're both screwed.

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Saturday, 12 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm average in almost every regard - especially physically (except for my exceptionally long and thick eyelashes) - and i don't particularly enjoy living...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 13 April 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry Clare. Maybe you should try shampooing with Tres Emme.

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Sunday, 13 April 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i should try that...but right now i'm eating a particularly good bean sprout, tomato, chutney and cheese sandwich, which is making everything quite quite good...

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Sunday, 13 April 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds quite healthy. I could go for something like that if it was surved in pita bread, with a skim of mayo...

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Sunday, 13 April 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am 5'2''. I am short person in a n average person's world... but I like being short cause then everyone likes to protect me... I get picked up and carried a lot and it's actually quite fun... maybe some people might find it a bit degrading...but I love it. My friend it 6'5'' and he's from Chile. He pickes me up as you would a small child and holds me on his hip. It's quite fun! As for the sandwiches, give me avocado and sprouts anyday man!

Lola Falana, Sunday, 13 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm 5'3", and i like being short, except that they put all the cheap Haagen beer on the top shelf in the supermarket and its really hard to reach.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 13 April 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I like tall men. Where are you, Dan?
;^}

(I'm 5'7", and for some reason most of the guys I meet are barely that tall, if not shorter.)

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 14 April 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm... I'm guessing about at least a thousand miles away from you, because that's how it usually goes.

All the guys are 5'7" or shorter? Damn, i guess they grow 'em big where I'm at...

On Queer Eye last night they made over this tall guy, and when they pranced in at the beginning they looked like funny elves next to him!

I'm taller than Andrew! For real.

3inty, Friday, 14 November 2003 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

By like 1/2 an inch. Be sure and carve THAT on yr gravestone.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 November 2003 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that would be a really funny epitaph, aren't you buried in the Waikato somehwere?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Saturday, 15 November 2003 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't sound so excited, I'm taller than Andrew too. By like 3 inches, so there.

Livvie (Livvie), Saturday, 15 November 2003 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but you're freakishly elongated, so that doesn't count.

Minty (Minty), Saturday, 15 November 2003 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Carving "I'm taller than Andrew" on my gravestone might be taking it a bit far, Roo. Having said that, I'm definitely printing myself a certificate for my wall.

Minty (Minty), Sunday, 16 November 2003 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do girls hate tall men with large cocks?

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Friday, 21 November 2003 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the first time I've heard that

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 21 November 2003 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, yeah, where did you get that idea??

I like to kiss/hug/etc people who are around the same height as me

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 21 November 2003 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm too tall to hug anyone comfortably, I always get a shoulder in my tits or something equally painful. It's a bit depressing.

Livvie (Livvie), Friday, 21 November 2003 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ciderpress, Saturday, 21 February 2009 17:24 (sixteen years ago)

i was just wondering which small world you lived in

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:01 (sixteen years ago)

hoisin beef with water chestnuts and green onions and mixed veggies is one of the most awesome things to stir/fry in my small world of New England, imo, afaik

blimey (unregistered), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

my brother lives in new england. do you know him? he is very tall.

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

i don't really like new england iirc

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

i like woks though, i need one

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

also do you wear one of those smocks when you cook like that tall guy with a blue smock is wearing

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

Is he over 6 feet tall and male? I probably know him. I hope he likes New England, even if you don't.

blimey (unregistered), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:11 (sixteen years ago)

Nah, I never wear a smock, and I sometimes get curry stains on my sweatshirts when I cook. I need a smock.

blimey (unregistered), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:12 (sixteen years ago)

i have a wok but i always forget to use it and use a differnt pan instead. d'oh!

(sometimes = once a couple weeks ago. it sucked)

blimey (unregistered), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

he is like 6.5 feet tall and male. i don't know how he feels about new england. he hasn't lived many places, he's in college. he doesn't know how to use a wok either :(

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

sucks about the curry stains man

я рилли (harbl), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

tru

If you learn how to use a wok in college, it ruins the experience of ordering cheap takeout thai food all the time. I wouldn't recommend it.

blimey (unregistered), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

fortunately i am not in college and takeout thai here is expensive and mediocre so i never order it.

class act, thanks bro (tehresa), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

aww, my condolences (abt the food part, not the not-in-college part)

class act, thanks bro (tehresa), Sunday, 22 February 2009 21:29 (sixteen years ago)

probably like a box of love or just air, he's probably using the box as a pretext to come see me right?

q is taller iirc

computer champion (harbl), Sunday, 29 March 2015 22:02 (ten years ago)

though the other day a man who is the same height as me asked if i was 6'1" lol

computer champion (harbl), Sunday, 29 March 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

I've shrunk. Degenerative disk. Clocking in just over 5'10'' these days, when I could once claim a solid 5'11''

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 29 March 2015 22:05 (ten years ago)

I also feel shorter in general because I used to wear heels a lot at lolcorporatewhore job, now I'm a social worker and basically wear nun shoes.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 29 March 2015 22:06 (ten years ago)

The worst thing about being tall is having to take a shower in a hotel. They are all designed for people that are 5' 8".

calstars, Monday, 30 March 2015 00:33 (ten years ago)

i'm 6'8" and wouldn't mind having some of those cards

ciderpress, Monday, 30 March 2015 00:41 (ten years ago)

I have a friend who's like 6'9" (very skinny type so he looks even taller) and we've had some conversations about that. for a long while he had many complexes and didn't feel comfortable with himself.
but at some point, around his 30s, he got OK with it and even began to have a kind of superiority complex on some aspects.
I remember feeling bad for him many times because the one thing everybody would talk about with him at parties, dinners etc was his height... must be so annoying...
On the other hand, sometimes I think it must be so great to be much taller than most people. when you're standing in a crowded metro, for instance, and you're fine and able to breath above !
still, as a much shorter person, sometimes I wonder how people who are taller or bigger manage with planes seats etc. I find them so small and uncomfortable even for my size...

Me too! And I hate that I feel that way but I'm used to being the tall one. It's not even miffed so much as surprised and OK a little miffed. My best friend is almost 5'11" and I feel like a shrimp around her. It's weird with heels because I pretty much always wear flats and if I do have a heel on people always say something. I'd wear heels more often but they hurt my feet!

calstars, Thursday, 9 April 2015 12:30 (ten years ago)

xpost - I'm not tall enough so that happens in regular sized stalls but one time years ago my friend and I did a bunch of bong hits and wound up in a bathroom that had been designed for kids only we didn't realize that at first and thought it was a bathroom of little people or elves and were in there for like 20 minutes talking over the stalls and kneeling to wash our hands while dying laughing and talking in what we decided elves voices sounded like.
