the term "music snob"

so a girl in my class was talking about her friend "the music snob." he made her a mix tape, so she was showing it off. i looked at it and, you know i'm not a music snob by ANY MEANS but um the songs on the tape were like the beatles, steely dan, liz phair...i can't think of any other ones, except to say i was hardly impressed.

so what is a true music snob? maybe i'm thinking of indie snobs, i dunno, but the beatles? LIZ PHAIR? people think too highly of themselves and their tastes!

rebekah (rebekah), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm increasingly impressed by ANYONE who likes the Beatles, but my references are pretentious. Liquid Liquid are a good sort of snobby example, but they're really cool. I'd really like to spread the obscurish bands I like, so I'm prob not a snob, just a nerd.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What would an insufferable music snob's 12 CDs be?

buttch (Oops), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought music snobs were the kind of people who annoyed the shit out of you because they were so pretensious. I never considered it a badge of honor. I know people who would fall into this category because they will not listen to anything that's been played in a commercial, or could be considered "mainstream" music. I hate talking about music with people like that. They give off this air that their musical taste is so much more important than everyone else's. If it sounds good to you, what business is it for someone else to tell you that you have no taste? True, I think a lot of pop music is souless and as a unique as a fastfood hamburger, but I don't look down on people who's days are brightened by it's existence!

six years pass...

a burning question for ya'll: is there a difference between a music nerd and a music snob? i've created this imaginary dichotomy in my mind that i like a lot that goes like this: music nerds know a lot of music but don't hold value judgments about a piece of music's worth aside from their own personal tastes, music snobs also know a lot of music but do hold value judgments about music. for example a music snob might think jazz or (to use a snobbish friend of mine's tastes as an example) math rock, are superior because of rythmic or melodic complexity, refinement and sophistication. whereas a music nerd would primarily consider the immediate aesthetic enjoyment of a piece of music, and a result has a more er, honest relationship to music?

fwiw i consider myself a music nerd, at least in theory, according to this definition. is what i wrote above total crap? or maybe just totally obvious? i figure i should get some sort of feedback on this before i start shouting it from the mountaintops and stuff.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 01:41 (sixteen years ago)

admitting you're a music nerd means you're probably way snobbier than you know or admit.

that post is music snob material xp

jØrdån (omar little), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 01:52 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, if you only "hold value judgement on your personal tastes", and your personal taste just happens to be Albert Ayler, Diamond D, Das Damen and Snakefinger, then I got some fuckin news for you.

sexually blount country matters (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 25 November 2009 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

er i think what i meant was your value judgements only extend as far as your personal taste, and are perceived as personal, as in not anybody else's business and not to be imposed on other people.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 02:24 (sixteen years ago)

that's a very generous interpretation of the word "snob" and a distinction no one will bother to make.

i made this unclear, the above is what a non-music snob does.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 02:44 (sixteen years ago)

er, non-snob

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 02:46 (sixteen years ago)

an important part of this is evaluating a piece of music on its own terms, something a music snob might be unable to do in some cases. for example the math rock snob i mentioned above dismisses nearly every punk band as shit, because there's no rythmic dynamic. but it's like, there's not supposed to be any fucking time changes man it's punk rock.

samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 25 November 2009 02:48 (sixteen years ago)
