I (vaguely) hate having to wait two weeks for the Brunettes album (well no not really)

While my back was turned, it appears that they were rescued from being unable to release their record by . . . EMI?!?! K-bizarre reversal. I've liked the handful of songs I've heard on comps/videos/etc; & think they should, er, do that thing they do. & make more videos. Before I met petra, I imagined she looked the Brunettes gurl. Er um yeah. I don't really like twindiepop, honest . . . (haha Mëstar vs Pine vs Brunettes FITE!)

Me? Look like the gorgeous queen of twee Heather? Flattery will get you EVERYWHERE, Ess.

petra jane (petra jane), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the brunettes freak me out because johnathon sounds exactly like his older cousin Mark who I used to know and live with

esskay what is K-bizarre? do you mean like Okay Bizarre. ?

"k" = internet geek suffix meaning very. i hate the brunettes.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

k as in kilo as in 1000. or possibly one of the most concise abbreviations of "fuckin'", I'm not too sure.

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I imagined Petra as looking like that too! I have only ever heard the one Brunettes song though, and I kinda liked it, but maybe not enough to buy the album.

Livvie, Thursday, 10 October 2002 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Heather is the queen of archness (not a bad thing), I think. And she's not that hot, I always spend about 10 minutes trying to work out if that's her or not at the King's Arms etc.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 10 October 2002 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i got their peter king lathe cut record, i'll wait a while til it gets "collectable" & sell it to you for some stupid ass amount of $$$ if you like.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 11 October 2002 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

just whatever you do don't PLAY it! 3 spins at the bastard'll SKIP! not that most Auckland hipsters even play their record collections or anything...

[haha i have a Pumice lathe that even Jon doesn't have. it skips already tho, sucks]

petra jane (petra jane), Friday, 11 October 2002 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting an advanced copy of the Brunettes album. (I can already hear you seething with jealousy!) They look cute if you give them beer.

alex (alex), Friday, 11 October 2002 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I don't buy albums (though apparently the first 200 copies come with a colouring book, which is too twee for words), & I definately don't by vinyl (I'm allergic).

oh yeah has everyone seen the new Pine video? It's like a cuddlier version of Belle & Sebastian!
(nb I have never heard a B&S track)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

my copy of the brunettes lathe cut doesn't skip, it plays fine.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Saturday, 12 October 2002 06:35 (twenty-two years ago)

ess kay, you've never heard a B&S track?! lucky you! i consider them to be a lifetime affliction now. being only one B&S EP and one B&S album into my rollocking saturday night.

the brunettes' colouring in book used to be $10 at gigs. yargh.

alex (alex), Saturday, 12 October 2002 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
why are the brunettes coming back to melbourne? there's not enough room in this town for another pop band

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 20 October 2003 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

You could just as easily replace the word 'pop' in that sentence with the words 'New Zealand'.

Damian (Damian), Monday, 20 October 2003 08:35 (twenty-one years ago)

there's always room in melbourne for new zealand bands

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it's just that the brunettes go over *too* well with the rock crowd

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 20 October 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Blah blah I bet Heather helps I'm so perceptive blah blah

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf? I've never heard the Brunettes album! why did I start this thread?!?
(possibly desiring-signifiers-of-Auckland while "trapped" in Dunedin/Rotorua?)

etc, Tuesday, 21 October 2003 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds pretty right, they sum up a certain Aucklandness pretty damn well. Do you even like them? I REALLY miss the early Brunettes (in as much as I miss any Brunettes, anyway) when they were louder/more VU and wrote better songs and put out a 7" lathe in an edition of like 18. I don't miss that bit, that was annoying. They sound a bit like that live, sometimes.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

They were pretty good the last time we saw em

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that was when I was all "oh wow they're LOUD and stuff, this is what they were like back in the good old days, they sound like the VU!". How openminded of me. I still quite like them, I suppose, I thought their version of Xanadu's 'Kill Kill Kill' was the best thing they did that night though.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 22 October 2003 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Me, before- Do you even like them?

That sounds a lot more accusatory (don't know of what, it's latenight paranoia probably) than it was meant to. I was just wondering, since it does seem an odd thread to have started.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 23 October 2003 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)
