I Rate Smog

Well it's mostly all good (esp "Wild Love", "Julius Caesar", "Knock Knock"), but I think I've underrated "Red Apple Falls" pretty badly. Tonight it's seeming very pretty/wistful/sad, in the past it just seemed whiny and annoying (well, that's overstating the case but y'know). The thing is I think you need to know the story behind the title/theme to really get it, in a way, which is: Smog and his siblings are being looked after by their oldest (15 or so) sister, and she decides they're going for a drive. They drive for AGES on country roads till she gets to a little waterfall type place, and they swim. On the way out little Bill Smog notices a nearly covered w/vines sign that says "Red Apple Falls". Years later he returns as a fullgrown SMOG (not a (Smog), what's w/that shit?) but can never find this place. I think it's a nice story. I'm easily pleased. So anyway, Smog in general, this record, etc?

I might've underrated it as this was the record I played the morning after an AWFUL and depressing night, the "come on"'s off 'Inspirational' just reminded me.

Once upon a time I thought Ex-Con was my theme song, which isn't a fact I should advertise. I like his lyrics and I was always fond of the fact that he never made himself out to be a nice guy in song.

A lot of musicians talk about getting a "filthy" sound. Now there are people making music out of data derived from measuring actual air pollution in several cities. Wired has published a piece on scientists who use a device—a 3"x5" box called a PuffTron—that can measure this information, which they then convert into music.

A passage from the article:

“We’re trying to take the rich set of patterns you find in music and apply that to air-pollution data so they become audible,” says Greg Niemeyer, of the University of California at Berkeley’s Center for New Media.

Niemeyer and Stanford University electronic music composer Chris Chafe take air-quality data sampled in locations including Katmandu, Shanghai and Tokyo, then turn the measurements into herky-jerky free jazz that streams for registered users on their Black Cloud site.

"to be of use" is stark, uncompromising, and as unsettling as it is beautiful. it's kind of like the drunken uncle of nick drake's "know". and then it's followed up with the title track which milks a spare, gently pulsing melody and grim lyrics for seven minutes. but you wouldn't alter a second.

anyhow, this is a bizarre thread. for starters, we have the seemingly unprovoked "ducksucker" taunts. and then we've got a strange grey outline framing the text - what's with that?

charlie h, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 09:45 (fifteen years ago)

it's strange, it's grey, it's smog
