why do they do this? is it some idiots idea that the louder the ad the more we will pay attention and buy their stupid product??just makes me grateful for the mute button........

donna (donna), Monday, 16 September 2002 02:18 (twenty-three years ago)

that's bad in general, but the worst is (in the US anyway) that they've been running the same mitsubishi ad for 4 years now with that goddamn barenaked ladies song (the "one week since you blah blah" song). FOUR FUCKING YEARS. it's not enough that these people be killed anymore - everyone who has ever worked at the ad agency, their friends and relatives, even the guy who delivered water to their office need to be sterilized and kept in a camp.

so you're watching TV and then you get to hear that fucking song two times a commercial break at 120 dB. kill me.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 16 September 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!

donna (donna), Monday, 16 September 2002 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr. Pedantic hat on:

It's actually not louder, it's just compressed all to hel so that the whole damn commercial is about as loud as an explosion during a normal commercial.

Mr. Pedantic hat off.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 16 September 2002 11:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh really! Wow. I hate compression, it's a horrible trick for chartaimed singles to use on the radio. As far as TV goes I guess the effect is the same (in NZ too) and it's awful... particularly when the ad involves a stupid song. Does everyone remember the "Zoom Zoom Zoom" ad? Christ.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 September 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

that frigging ad is still on

donna (donna), Monday, 16 September 2002 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, why do they do this? You're right, it is pretty annoying.

Shaz, Monday, 16 September 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah zoom zoom zoom zoom!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 16 September 2002 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey does ANYONE here actually watch/take in ads? I mute them or fastforward if it's on video. I remember a teacher of mine in high school saying that there was virtually no evidence that advertising (in general even) actually had much of an effect, everyone just took it for granted it did. Does he have a point?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 01:01 (twenty-three years ago)

what on earth is this 'zoom zoom zoom' you're referring to???

spectra, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess spectra hasn't noticed THAT ad, so maybe yr teacher has a point.
It was for some kind of car. Had a bunch of kids on bicycles and scooters, then the car "zooming" along. This annoying "zoom zoom zoom" song plays loudly in the background. Horrible

one month passes...
I HATE the loud commercial blare as well. My wife is always able to fall off to sleep LONG before I. Often, I try to watch the television with the volume turned low so as to not disturb her rest. All of a sudden comes one of those AWFUL car ads and she stirs in her sleep while I make a lunge for the remote to "mute". Anyway, I suppose a side "benefit" to all the hollering TV ads is that I get to catch up on my reading (I just switch the damned set off).

Jim, Monday, 4 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

haha theres always letters about this problem in the TV Guide.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 01:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Stop watching porn, Jim.

webber (webber), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 06:04 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...
I figured out why they do this - it's specifically so that people who get up and go get a cup of tea/go to the toilet can still hear it. nAha!
