woah. i just looked over at ILE and they have a thread about freud too. andrew, you can delete this - i didn't know it was so unoriginal & now i feel silly!

i don't rate him very highly. plenty of poststructuralist feminists rate him too high. i don't think you need to invoke the theories of some sexist dude from the 19th century to establish that the self/identity isn't a neat coherent little package.

jung is better, you should read him instead. freud lived about half his life in the 20th century, btw.

yes, thats why i said he was from the 19th century, not in it. i have never read any jung, what makes him better than freud?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 20 October 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

his dream theories are less literal, more open-ended, and therefore more interesting than freud's. i haven't read any since, uh, early '00, but probably anything of his is good to read.

"Memories, Dreams, Reflections" was a good read, Jung's autobiography pretty much. Never read any Freud, yet

The 'collective unconscious' is an interesting idea. Whether there's any truth to it, I have no idea.

i think i just like reading theories by people who are obsessed w/ sex. it makes things exciting! tho i don't like reading him, so, there goes that.

black plastic (black plastic), Monday, 20 October 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

if i want to read crazy incomprehensible theories by sex-obsessed dudes, i'll just read ilx!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahahaha!

jung and freud are both had very interesting views, i especially like freud's theory on religion etc. i reckon freud had stuff sorted tbh, albeit yes, a bit of a nymph lol.
