I Rate the Undertones

They fucking rule. Who else here likes them apart fom me and Elisabeth? Their tunes are fantastic, their lyrics are insanely cute. Also Feargal Sharkey is a great singer, such nice vibrato! Um I dunno right now 9/10, they're the English (or Irish maybe) Ramones. I maybe like them better, even. The last two records go off in soul/late Beatles directions I dunno if the Ramones could've done (tho obv NOT DOING that 'progressing' thing was their whole thing, but they kinda tried w/the Spector record and the Undertones never had such guidelines and had already done two GREAT (well I still don't have the first one, I've heard it a lot tho) straight guitar poprock records), but then the Undertones never quite rocked as well as the Ramones, I guess. I can't help comparing them tho, sorry. Teenage interests, great rhythm guitar, wonderful melodies. I dunno if I prefer them to the Ramones anymore, really, but I'm not about to delete all this crap NOW. I love them both. Do you like the Undertones? They seem overlooked!

"His mum bought him a synthesiser/brought the Human League in to advise him" not an exact rhyme, I prob got it wrong anyway, but HAHAHA what a line!

Yeah they're good, shut up.

yes excellent. There was one big magazine article in particular that really got me into them - maybe in Popwatch? They were from Ulster, I think.

Yeah! I can't really remember how I heard about them, some reissue program I read about in Q, I think. I don't think anyone but me has suffered this annoying obsession w/comparing them to the Ramones, I wish I'd stop

hey andrew what track is that line from?

john peel's favourite band/song, right? - they were on his fabric dj set, but my reaction to that was horribly affected by his inclusion of hamiltron's favourite sons three tracks previously.

I think Ulster is a predominantly Protestant name for the region. The Undertones are from Derry (also known as Londonderry, but not to Catholics) and the city itself is about 80% Catholic but the electorates are drawn up in such a way to ensure that the Protestants win the seats in government.

The band's actually re-united (without Feargal Sharkey, who works in broadcasting now) and apparently they don't suck. The song of theirs that I remember most is one called "Mars Bars" which is about how all other chocolate bars are crap compared to Mars bars and how people who eat Twix and Buttons deserve to get rotten teeth.

hey @ cat snacks tonight my archnemesis j0 was playing some boring rokkenroll, then suddenly "teenage kicks"! then "danger! high voltage", & "i love rock'n'roll". apallingly, she then used this to segue into the peaches take on "bad reputation", at which point I stormed out.

etc, Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh hey andrew there's this boo radleys b-side called "peachy keen" which has a line like "I used to tune in (Radio) One / the Human League were on" or something.

I thought the Undertones w/out Feargal was That Petrol Emotion, I guess it was just the O'Neills. Has anyone heard any TPE that they'd actually recommend? I like "Big Decision" alright, that's all I know.

I wonder how Livvie's rating their third Lp

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty fucking highly, really. It's very catchy.

Livvie (Livvie), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's the one where they started writing more "serious"/gloomy lyrics, like the title track's about a relationship fucked up by the troubles or something, I'm not much good at noticing lyrics tho

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 22 December 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I can't say I really see your Ramones comparisons so much, maybe that's where they started to get more 'advanced' or whatever. I can see it in "True Confessions" though, I think that's from the earlier records.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i've never heard this band.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...
Have you heard them yet? You should. THEY ARE NOT FROM ENGLAND. I'm not sure what I was thinking back then. Might've been my Hitler phase.
