Geekiest arts papers

I've just been at uni and my Shakespeare paper was full of geeks and dorks and stuff. It was a whole different crowd from the english students I'd been exposed to in other papers. What are the geekiest classes and stuff you've taken? I would love to hear about the experience.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope this isn't offensive to any geeks. Now that word looks weird. This is a dumb idea for a thread but I'm feeling WEIRD from being at uni.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just so you know, geeks are all alright with me.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger Nicholson's yr lecturer isn't he? He wore that Shakespeare shirt all the time when I took that paper, except that was two or three years ago or so! It wasn't that geeky at all last time.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope he wears it every week this year! It's fully geeky now, at least I think it is. There's only one indie kid which is kinda shocking for an english paper.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The geekiest paper I ever took was Middle English Literature, I guess. Even half the girls were geeky! I saw that lecturer eating a big block of chocolate once, he was great.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What happened to Lola and Dan and Andrew, Jon? Where are they?

The Leader (Adrian McCoy), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the one time I went to m4rcel's 300-level shakespeare paper (to take notes for him, heh), I had pretty much the same reaction as you, E.

(ps : i'm working @ the k rd bookstore mon/tues/fri; come & visit)
(pps : 'roo, post to my fall thread on ilx)

etc, Monday, 1 March 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Anglo-Saxons - it was an interdisciplinary geekfest. mmmm geeks

ducklingmonster (ducklingmonster), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah they beat dumbass cool types

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck yeah.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I might see you tomorrow S, I got nothing to do for like three hours.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

film and media studies had Red Frizz in it therefore it was wankiest paper ever by default.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i never notice geeks, i just notice wankers. i hate wankers.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i talked to some guy from one of my music classes today. it was weird. he asked me if there was a name for my "scene". "is it called dunedin noise rock?" he asked. i gently reminded him that i do gigs with simon and rainy and that they can hardly be classed as dunedin noise rock. god how weird. he hangs out with that rock degree guy, the one i probably told you all about, who wanted to write a dissertation on porn music ("don't laugh!!" me: "hahahahahahaha!!!!!" oh i'm an asshole). anyway hey beth, we're a "scene". how does it feel?

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry now i am being an asshole, its just that i'm not in any papers. i like geeks. people ttry to impress me intellectually when i wear my glasses though, its fucking lame.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

None of my papers are that geeky overall, they all seem to be full of fairly normal/boring looking people. My AMST lecturer has an Unknown Pleasures tattoo though.

Livvie (Livvie), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's first year for you, man, they all drop out pretty soon leaving the GEEKS and um the smart NONGEEKS

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you tell the smart NONGEEKS from the normal-looking people?

Livvie (Livvie), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

They make it to third year!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah I SO HOPE that's me. What stage are you?

Livvie (Livvie), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahaha

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:22 (twenty-one years ago)

oo where on the body is that unknown pleasures tatt?
I went to uni today - to see Chris Knox, and Pumice, but he/they pulled out a couple of hrs b4 they were due to play and I don't know why - did Chris Knox play in Dunedin? was S.N there???? I was scared of how nicely (expensive looking, trendy) dresssed the students were, it's been like that for ages I know oh yeah and it was the 1st day so they probably all wore their supposed finest threads.
Also re thread topic Akl ling staff were renowned for there marvellous uncool attire when I was there. Actually one of the things I miss about school (any level) is having (or the possibility of having) a distracting crush on a lecturer, tutor, or (least likely) a fellow student. I'm prob doing some correspondence (sorry "extramural") papers [[which I have already shortened to "C.lit" and "Anal ling" (linguistic analysis)]] so that shld be vastly better for me but I will have no-one to fancy.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry for my spelling/grammar mistakes

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get this crushing on lecturers thing, I'm not a CHICK tho.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Spectra I don't care about spelling ETC, I'm just glad yr still posting here despite yr vow not to

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it wasn't really a VOW, it was something tho

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

but I did a their/there wrong, I hardly ever do that

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well fuck off then

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Nuh!

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok DON'T then

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

honey we are the queens of the scene

ducklingmonster (ducklingmonster), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ha

ducklingmonster (ducklingmonster), Monday, 1 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Tattoo is on the arm. He also has a quiff. My ENGL102 lecturer is even cooler though, he looks like Tom Cruise in Magnolia! I really wish he lectured like that. I don't get the lecturer crush thing either and I'm a CHICK. And yeah I'm also glad you're still here Spectra, I like reading your messages.

Livvie (Livvie), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks that's nice to hear.
But re attraction to lecturers, I don't understand what you don't get -do you just mean it doesn't happen to you personally or you don't get why anyone would?
Old/er/ish people = sexy, brainy = sexy

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i totally get spectra's crush-on-the-lecturer thing, well at least i did when my major was gender and womens studies. its was phwoariffic. i have never crushed on a tutor.
chris knox didn't end up playing in dunedin, it was such a bummer. i'd spent all week looking forward to it and thinking "oh man i wish spectra was here like the old days".

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I mean it doesn't happen to me personally, sorry. Or maybe that I don't get why the fact that they're your lecturer makes them seem attractive? Though I agree w/ older and brainy being sexy so I DON'T KNOW, maybe I'm just too difficult to please.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

if brian eno was your lecturer, i think you would understand.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too. But I like him when he's NOT my lecturer too - he wouldn't be hot because of that.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that I just don't get it personally, really, I'm sure all attractive traits are subjective anyway.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I never had a crush on a lecturer, but then most of my lecturers have been old geeks with beards. Tutors, on the other hand - rowwr!

Minty (Minty), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i have an itty bitty crush on one of my advisors. from what i remember, he can play the koto, the sitar, javanese gamelan, and a bunch of other stuff.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

ha beth i will pass that on to the rock degree-ers who want to put us in a neat little box :-). "queens of the scene". i like it.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The geekiest arts paper ever, tho I've never taken it, would have to be the English Department's summer school LOTR paper. I think they do it in summer school so all the computer science students etc can take it without messing up their semester timetables.

Minty (Minty), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It's just odd, certainly not an ALL WOMEN EVERYWHERE thing but pretty common amongst both women I know (well now that Spectra's in) and (more) amongst girls in my classes w/decent looking lecturers, there's always a girl or two talking to him for ages after the class and following him around. But as Sp pointed out older, smart, so yeah big deal. Actually it's weird being back and noticing now people react to someone turning up and being an expert, the guys relaxed once he made a mistake.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Anton yr a tutor! You don't count!

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Like I haven't noticed male students doing anything like this EVER in all my 13 years of university

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

thats odd, because i notice men sticking around after class to schmooze lecturers more at otago. my lecturer crushes are 9/10 times on female lecturers, and i sure as hell don't schmooze them after class.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought one of my tutors was pretty (in a nice way you know?) once, but that was about it. I don't find the AK english department very desirable!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Roo I've shagged my tutors before, so I do so count. Never slept with one of my students, tho. Professional ethics, etc.

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

way to surreptitiously slip details of your sex life onto the board, anton.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid that paper wasn't as geeky today. Obviously I only got that idea because I was one of the geeks who went to the first lecture. Oh no!!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Di you wouldn't know surreptition if it bit you in the butt. And this board probably knows all about my sex life anyway.

Minty (Minty), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

by the way, "professional ethics" are only going to hinder you from your life long ambition to be a giggolo. *whistles david lee roth*

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Nonsense! The Way of the Gigolo entails a very strict moral code, requiring rigorous mental and physical discipline. It's not all tight pants and money, you know.

Minty (Minty), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Anton! I saw a guy at university today who looks just like you!! Just a bit taller. It was bizarre.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ewww tight shorts!

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Anton did you see Flashbacks yesterday night? It was the best one ever, they played TOM VERLAINE.

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Elisabeth how was WIRE?

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Just like me? But taller? He must be a devil with the ladies!

Minty (Minty), Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

anton, I can see you as a superviser in a hall of residence

ps (Knox, Knox)

indie first year, Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hey elisabeth that guy you saw must've been john denver!

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:53 (twenty-one years ago)

A hall of residence? Are you mad? The prospect of living with even one other person is vaguely freaking me out; sharing accomodation with 200-odd thuggish provincial snobs would be about as close to Hell as I can imagine.

Minty (Minty), Thursday, 4 March 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

&according to the John Denver FAQ here http://www.shellworld.net/~emily/txt/faq-8.txt, I'm at least as tall as he was.

Minty (Minty), Thursday, 4 March 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wire were so great!! They were really loud and we were by a speaker which was wobbling and it was quite scary. It was packed too, and there was lots of shovey punk dancing.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Thursday, 4 March 2004 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

You all should have come up for Wire!

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Thursday, 4 March 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wanted to!

Livvie (Livvie), Thursday, 4 March 2004 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah they really did rule, Livvie you'd have loved it, I think. HOW VERY ODD they looked older than say the Rolling Stones, hmm (except Colin maybe, he looked youngish)

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha ALL of the Rolling Stones? Even Keith? Cause I don't think I've ever seen anyone who looks older then Keith and is still capable of walking before.

Livvie (Livvie), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)
