this evening, neatly co-inciding with daylight savings clock changes, a 1979 film was played. This gem, called time after time, premised that H G Wells really did invent a time machine, and he and Jack the ripper were transported to 1979 San Francisco. H G pursues Jack in a variety of chase sequences of varying speeds, and mentions of free love proliferate throughout. The movie was a crap extravaganza even though the movie guide gave it 4/5 stars, but it set me to thinking. Where would I travel to in time if I had the opportunity?
One of the central characters of the film is a woman who feels "maternal" at the sight of H G struggling to cope with the vast amazing improvements of technology in the seventies. To spoil the story for eveyone, she ends up running off to the 1890s to be with him. So I think romance should be considered a possible if not primary objective of one's mission into the mists of time. Other factors might be polyester collecting, acquiring stock/works of art etc to sell off for millions, and also becoming the god of a primitive culture.
