A couple other NZ/Wellington specific questions

So, I'm signing the contract for the job at Victoria University. It's still a long way off, but I'm wondering if people could give me a sense of housing availibility and resources for finding housing in Wellington. I'm not finding many sites with helpful details (pics, etc.). What's it like to find a place in Wellington city centre? Where else might I look for housing, near uni or within walking/cycling distance? I'm looking to live alone, preferably not in a high-rise. Something with a bit of character is really preferred, but if that's not available, I'll take what's reasonable.

How long are leases generally for? What kind of rights do I have as a tenant? Is there a site that might be useful for me here?

What weeklies should I check out? Good radio? I'd love to get back to radio to do a show, if possible. Any NZ specific websites would be welcome, too.

All tips appreciated (again). More to come no doubt. And some thanks, too.

There's some general info about tenancy here:

bear in mind Mt Victoria is expensive to live in, and you won't want to be living in the Hutt Valley. The suburbs around Vic or within walk/bike distance are: Kelburn, Aro Valley, in & around the city, Mt Cook, Mt Victoria, also Brooklyn, Karori (tho quite far out). Aro Valley is good - can be pretty cheap, relatively bohemian, close to everything.

there are a lot of apartments now, esp in the inner city, but these can be avoided. Rents can vary greatly (as can quality of properties) so you may have to look at a lot of places before you find a nice one.

Rents are generally not fixed term and you usually need to give one month's notice once you intend to move out. landlords will ask for bond & rent in advance up front.

Most landlords use the newspaper to advertise (Dominion Post) on Wednesday & Saturday. If you're not looking just before the start of the academic year then there should be quite a lot of properties to look at.

That's about all I can think of now. Good luck.

Oh, good radio?? haha!

There's what used to be the student/alternative station Radio Active http://www.radioactive.co.nz/

There's a public access station as well which I can't remember offhand, but apart from that pretty much everything is either CanWest or some other multinational conglomerate

And here's the city council's information site:
