"cosmic crisp" seems to be the popular new variety

okay so like... i'm completely addicted to these. i have easily eaten at least a hundred of them this year. from what i can tell you can only buy them in nyc at whole foods, and because of this i have given so much money to whole foods this year, for many things. i go out of my way to shop there because i need to have a cosmic crisp apple every morning or my day is ruined. honestly, the consistency of the texture and taste of cosmic crisps even throughout the summer is so good that i'm worried i'm going to find out that cosmic crisps are singlehandedly destroying the environment in the state of washington. the fact that whole foods seems to have some sort of exclusive license on them in nyc is definitely suspicious. there must be something evil going on. they taste too good

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 6 August 2025 15:54 (five months ago)

however we are so close to apple season here in new york that i will be taking a break from cosmic crisps. i can't imagine getting better apples in the world than the ones at union square greenmarket during apple season. i am salivating just thinking about it...

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 6 August 2025 15:57 (five months ago)

It took over 20 years to develop the Cosmic Crisp® apple. After all, it takes time to work hand in hand with Mother Nature to classically breed the right varieties until you find The One.

Bruce Barritt, horticulturist and developer of the Cosmic Crisp® apple, set out on a mission to fill a produce void for a firm, crisp, and juicy apple. After decades of cross-pollinating, tasting, and testing, along with research and development with Washington State University’s world-class tree fruit breeding program, the Cosmic Crisp® apple was discovered. Thanks to the care and attention of choosing the perfect cross of Honeycrisp and Enterprise varieties, the apple is non-GMO and naturally slow to brown.

WSU researchers, including pome fruit breeder Kate Evans are proud to have introduced The Apple of Big Dreams™ to the market that is exclusive to Washington State. The Cosmic Crisp® apple has earned high marks from consumers and chefs for its perfectly balanced flavor, crisp texture, juiciness and striking color. From snacking and baking to drinks and decor, the Cosmic Crisp® apple brings star power to all the ways we enjoy apples.

j0rdan otm

one of the best things about cosmic crisp is the insane levels of juiciness. you can almost choke on it if you’re not careful

haven’t found a cosmic crisp supplier since i moved back to canada. i was buying them at kroger in ohio of all places, which was lucky cause i lived far from the nearest whole foods

i also love that it was invented and developed in the last couple decades. on some level i knew they were still breeding new fruits, but i figured it was either minor variations like “how do we make potatoes 1% more frost resistant” or tacky stuff like pluots and tangelos. who knew they were still coming out with apples? it’s made me very optimistic about the future of fruit

flopson, Wednesday, 6 August 2025 16:21 (five months ago)

my bf was getting bags of cosmic crisps from trader joe's iirc!

definitely seen them in other grocery stores here. maybe it's a proximity thing. i wonder if washington is still an apple mvp. there's always some place competing with fewer regulations where you didn't even imagine a certain kind of fruit could grow. hell utah grows a fair amount of apples. usually a local apple, no matter the variety, is going to be bomb. unless the grower is shitty with pesticides additives etc.

i don't blame you j0rdan for going to whole foods all the time. expensive as hell but the quality of their produce is undeniable.

They sell them in the UK in waitrose, I got a four pack today. I'm a bit underwhelmed - great crispy texture, very juicy, but the flavour is a bit meek, somewhat floral and lacking the sharp tang of a cox's.

My mind was blown when I learned that all citrus on earth today comes from like two genetic parents that don't look or taste anything like the fruits we know now. Plus there are WAY more citrus varieties that aren't normal in the US but are elsewhere! Lemons! Lemons are the result of centuries of crosses!

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 27 August 2025 15:26 (five months ago)

The Lucy Glo is a circus-freak apple with red-yellow skin and a red interior that shocks skeptics into submission. Most would expect this clown-urine soaked frog testicle to taste like an unhealed surgical wound since each bite resembles a freshly picked scab. However, most (whoever they are) should prepare their expectations to be shattered. This candy-like, perfectly tart, masterclass in a full flavor profile is a joy to eat and lives up to its flashy appearance. A novelty apple, this is not.

Ha, ha, they do have a way with a phrase:

These little shits are glorified crabapples masquerading as edible fruit and should not be tolerated outside of cider production and pretentious baking applications. Each minuscule bite of these filthy monkey cheeks explode with an intense yet somehow dry flavor combination that will make you want to spontaneously vomit.

I definitely disagree with some of their rankings, especially what they rank higher than others. I like Fuji's a lot and don't think SweeTango's are really that much if at all better than some other varieties they rank lower.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 27 August 2025 18:31 (five months ago)

I've been eating mostly honeycrisps since my previous post.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Monday, 12 January 2026 19:46 (three weeks ago)

I'm thinking there may be a glut of cosmic crisps because I've been seeing $2 bags for the past month... I wonder what the limits of apple hoarding could be?

Philip Nunez, Monday, 12 January 2026 19:54 (three weeks ago)

i've only had the bags of cosmic crisp from trader joe's before this, which if i recall correctly aren't organic. they were pretty good but didn't blow me away.

i noticed they had single organic ones the other day.

as i was finishing it something about the density and flavor reminded me of a ripe anjou pear? but still crunchy, sweet and apply with some floral notes.

i'm a long-time honeycrisp devotee, the organic ones have been my #1 apple, but i think this beats it. i guess i'll see how consistent the quality is.

map, Monday, 12 January 2026 19:55 (three weeks ago)

My only complaint about the cosmic crisp is that those i've bought recently (organic, fred meyer) are just too big!

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 January 2026 21:51 (three weeks ago)

i saw map not loving sugarbees upthread but i've been working some of those into my rotation and i like them, def a less complex flavor but also none of the floral, rose etc notes that i don't typically always love in apples. texturally they work for me and i don't miss the tartness per se

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 January 2026 21:52 (three weeks ago)

i'm almost always eating an apple w/ at the very least some coffee and on the weekends w/ eggs toast and coffee so i don't find myself wanting acidity in my apples all that much currently, i am usually looking for crisp flesh w/ a pure sweet flavor

slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Monday, 12 January 2026 21:53 (three weeks ago)

One of my breakfasts for a while has been chopped apple with plain yogurt, muesli, and a little honey. The honey with the tart/sweet of the apple against the yogurt is so good when I'm really in the mood.
