at least pot has a noticeable effect, cigarettes are just a waste of money. like gambling or something, except gambling doesn't give you cancer. can anyone defend smoking for any reason besides "it looks cool" (which admittedly it does)?

Well I like the taste/sensation (they used to be advertised that way, after all), I like the soothing effect of whatever drug it is (nicotine pres) and the use it lets me put my hands to in annoying/worrying situations. They use a 10min period up perfectly if killing time. They often give me an excuse to go outside for some time alone. They're cool, f'sure, they're also friendly and kinda romantic. BUT I suspect we've both made our minds up about this, so yeah.

Yeah looking cool was pretty much my primary reason (I think it started w/a Tom Verlaine rec cover, actually) but smoking as a useful anecdote for ANXIETY had a lot to do w/ it esp. as I was beginning/in the middle of my worst agoraphobic period at the time, just gives you something to do at bus stops and shit and I guess I thought it made me look TOUGH, still kinda do a bit. And I concur w/ the taste and romantic, cigs and tea in bed etc etc. Fuck it I love smoking, woo go me.

not really an issue for me, really. i see a few people going to more gigs coz of this, and a few less, too. but then certain places have a hang around smoking outside kind of ethic anyway, so maybe this'll work.. till they ban smoking in outdoor access areas..

Bus stops strike me (non smoker) as a particularly bad place to smoke, because I see people throwing away the unused portion when the bus comes. For something to do at a bus stop, I suggest reading!
I'll probably be more likely to go to gigs now.

It sucks that in the centre of Wellington's CBD, there is an outside park that gets flooded with lunching workers - I often have to up and move all around trying to avoid the smoke... more smoking outside I think will lead to more littering problems since people seem to think it's okay to throw butts on the ground if they're outdoors.
Also Wellington is real windy and the gallery I'm involved with, whilst it's ostensibly non-smoking, lots of people smoke outside, out the front doors, and smoke blows back into the gallery. Yuck. I just wish more smokers would watch what their smoke is doing even when outdoors - I see plenty of people blowing smoke over babies and so on.

Cusp. I hate it when people smoke "outside" ie. JUST OUTSIDE THE DOOR so it blows inside, too. I don't do that, go me, watch where it's going and avoid babies etc too. I also hate the piles of wasted cigs next to busstops, grr. Tho if you just wanna be seen smoking it's a good way to get off lightly, maybe. And yeah Etc appetite supressant! They do that so well!
