As in records mostly but whatever. It wasn't v good, I don't think. My top 7 (so far, as always)-
Brian Wilson "Smile" (oh lordy lordy lord)
Howling Hex "The Return of the Third Tower" (side two is perfect, side one is weird fun)
Black Dice "Creature Comforts" (someone on ILM called this them going mental and just recording bonghits for an hour, well duh, it rules)
Dani Siciliano "Likes..." (I'm getting cramp in my foot)
Superpitcher "Here Comes Love" (for "People" and "Sad Boys" and "Happiness" and "Lovers Rock" and most of all "The Long Way")
Ghostface "The Pretty Toney Album" (it's better than Anton thinks)
Howling Hex "Section Two" (see, same band twice. Not right)

That's it

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's "2" actually

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't think of/don't own a single record made in 2004.

Livvie (Livvie), Friday, 14 January 2005 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I can include the Futurians "Subway Songs", can't I! So I have eight, not too useless

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't have incl "Smile" before I'd heard it (if that makes sense) but having done so yeah, it's so in. It's a new thing. Kinda sad Beatlebased pop can only get in if an old example gets revived, sorta, noone's stopping me listening to "Revolver" tho

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

And they'd better not try

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I only like old music anyway.

Livvie (Livvie), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Tho to be fair to myself I HAVE heard Smile and oh boy it sure is beautiful, and I've been taped the majority of both/maybe even ALL of one of those Howling Hex records and they're good too.

Livvie (Livvie), Friday, 14 January 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I can add the new Beastie Boys album and most of what Andrew got. Wish I had Kelis and stuff.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Saturday, 15 January 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

kelis - tasty. did that last sonic youth album come out in 2004? i liked a few tracks off that. apart from that, i can't think of much.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 15 January 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

2004 was alright I guess. I got to listen to more new stuff than I usually do, thanks to the radio station and being able to leave Soulseek on for days at a stretch.
I did my top 10 back in October, for reasons that completely escape me now. Anyway, it was:

10. The Roots - The Tipping Point
9. Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose
8. Junior Boys - Last Exit
7. Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
6. McLusky - The Difference Between Me and You is I'm Not on Fire
5. David Kilgour - Frozen Orange
4. The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
3. Edmund Cake - Downtown Puff
2. Kanye West - College Dropout
1. Brian Wilson - Smile

A few weeks ago I found out that it's disturbingly similar to N1ck bloody B0llinger's top 10. Argh! Anyway, the following are also fine albums released in 2004:

!!! - Louden Up Now
Frederico Aubele - Gran Hotel Buenos Aires
Batrider - They Said You're Hedeous
De La Soul - The Grind Date
Devin the Dude - To Tha X-Treme
Dimmer - You've Got to Hear the Music
Dizzee Rascal - Showtime
Felix Da Housecat - Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever
Holly Golightly - Slowly but Surely
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Magnetic Fields - I
Morrissey - You are the Quarry
Prince - Musicology
Skinnyman - Council Estate of Mind
Sleepers Union - Giant Spheres
Sonic Youth - Nurse
Tanya Stephens - Gangsta Blues
TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes
Superpitcher - Here Comes Love
Tom Waits - Real Gone
Wiley - Treddin' on Thin Ice

and probably lots I'm forgetting. I still haven't heard the new Ray Charles or Nancy Sinatra.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh some indierock came out, no I think I still don't like this year much. Madvillain, how good is that? Still want the Kanye West. The Bark Psychosis should be pretty good, I suppose. Next year DAFT PUNK/THE FALL/SLEATER-KINNEY/prob lots of others, hooray

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

bulbs, my advice is to listen to one of my favourite releases of 2004: Bosom Buddy by G Frenzy. You can probably buy it through Celebrate Psi Phenomenon. It's not trendy, unless bad actors' filmographys as lyrics, abusing richard gere, and sad uh...okay I can't describe it. There's a WASP cover on it but I don't think I've ever heard them.

cuspidorian (cuspidorian), Friday, 21 January 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

okay!

bulbs (bulbs), Friday, 21 January 2005 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I flipped through that NB book a while ago. Nick Hornby he ain't.

Gigs? Gigsgigsgigs hmmmm... Sonic Youth were great of course but Gillian and David were probably the best. Um, not probably the best, they were the best, easy. Seeing David Mitchell was somthing, even tho he didn't do any of the songs I was hanging out for. Some of the A Low Hum gigs were really good, esp. the Dead C rockin' out. The Futurians were ALWAYS fantastic, at least everytime I saw them/can remember they were. Um. Lines of Flight was an ordeal, but had it's moments. Ah man, I can't remember shit, this is why I collect posters. They're all in Dunedin tho, no help there. Oh Brian Wilson! Woot. There was a also a very good Renderers/Dick the Phone gig as part of the Fringe festival I think.

Minty (Minty), Friday, 21 January 2005 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok I'm gonna try and make a top 10 of stuff from last year I bought:
1. Black Dice - Creature Comforts (especially when stoned and tired woooah)
2. Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse
3. the Donnas - Gold Medal
4. Howling Hex - Return of the Third Tower
5. Beastie Boys - To the Five Boroughs

Doesn't look like I can get much further! I should have more by like August this year or something. Uhhh dunno.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah and Howling Hex section two, duh

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I wanna mention the Arthur Russell "Calling Out of Context" thing even tho it's an archival thing cos it's SO SO beautiful and light and happy. He was a SUPERHERO OF LOVE, man. That'd be, I dunno, in there somewhere, I like all these recs. Anton when're you gonna buy Black Dice's unprecedented masterpiece "Creature Comforts"?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 31 January 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

I'll buy it when you admit that Pretty Toney is a flimsy minger of an album and you only like it cos you're a jerk.

Minty (Minty), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)
