I Hate Gilligan's Island

He's a pathetic wretch, and the show isn't lame enough (or maybe just not in the right way) to be funny. I don't so much hate IT as much as I'm annoyed it replaced the Monkees, which I didn't remember to watch enough.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like my Dad and Stingray replacing Dr Who.
Gilligans Island comes close to Happy Days on the bore-o-meter though..

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Monday, 25 November 2002 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a version of the theme tune with the words to Stairway To Heaven in place of the normal lyrics.

Hey I didn't know there was a board where people could complain about afternoon television in New Zealand! Ever since the Brady Bunch went off I haven't had anything to watch to celebrate doing work on my thesis and mark the end of the day. No Get Smart anymore, either. Hogan's Heros, Happy Days and Gilligan's Island all suck. And Paradise Beach, and Saved by the Bell. I hate Screech but I'd rather watch Saved by the Bell than Hogan's Heroes. Paradise Beach is okay, have you guys seen the weird 'phantom surfer' plot that's on at the moment? I try not to watch that though. I can't believe they took the Brady Bunch off. I felt numb. Numb! One thing that was good on Happy Days was when the Fonz sang, and also when Suzi Quattro came on.

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh that phantom surfer must have been the surf nightmare thing me and Andrew were watching while talking on the phone, it was so stupid! It's pretty sad that Screech just hangs around Mr Belding after he's finished high school.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 08:12 (twenty-three years ago)

So it's a ghost surfer or something?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

And hi Maryann, complain about anything, if you feel the urge

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 26 November 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"And hi Maryann, complain about anything, if you feel the urge"

The ironing is delicious!

damian it was the other way round, it was the words of the gilligan theme & the music of stairway to h.
the band was called little roger & the goosebumps, the record was withdrawn after led zep sued them. i heard it once on radio hauraki in the early '80s but it wasn't even such a great joke to me at that time 'cause i was only passingly familiar with stairway to heaven (i hated led zeppelin)

& i think "gilligan" is a great show! i never watch daytime tv tho, don't even have a tv, so i'm just a poseur.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 07:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks, Duane, I wasn't sure which way round it was when I posted.

IT'S NOT AS GOOD AS THE MONKEES

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't think the Monkees was all that good but maybe I was expecting too much. It was really great to look at and the music was good but the whacky jokes sometimes got a bit nervewracking like I was always wondering 'Am I actually going to laugh now? NO ... now? No ... now?'

Maybe I will try more with Gilligan's Island - I only watched one episode and I got really mad with the theme tune because it goes 'The Millionaire does this and that, The skipper does it too, the Captain is all this and that,' and then it suddenly winds up with 'And there were many more.' And who are these others left out of the theme tune? MARYANN! What utter tripe.

maryann (maryann), Thursday, 28 November 2002 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Well yes, I never actually LIKED the show, for itself, really. But the MONKEES were great and I like their records so I like the show that started it. It's normally pretty annoying and the funniest bits are where they forget the script etc. I do want to see "Head" again, though.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait doesn't it go (on one version anyway, if there's more than one) "the Professor and, MaryANN, here on Gilligan's Isle!"? I don't have much idea of the lyrics mostly though, obviously.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 December 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

he's right you know

doorag (hellbaby), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah maryann was in there

Chief 2 Tone (Chief 2 Tone), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I swear there must be more than one version, or something, because to be honest, the scientist was left out of the song too, but I didn't realise that til later.

"Because I Could Not Stop for Death"
by Emily Dickinson

Because I [could]* not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
and Immortality.

We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labour, and my leisure too
For his civility.

We passed the school where children played,
[ At wrestling in a ring]+
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.

We paused before a house that seemed
a swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.

Since then 'tis centuries; but each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracer Hand is thee Giant in the human heart!

maryann (maryann), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

That version leaves Maryann out too.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 4 December 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
I recall I once saw an episode of Gilligan's Island in syndication one night about 3 years ago in which Maryann and Ginger, naievely thinking they were close to being rescued from the island had roughly the following conversation:
Ginger: I can't wait to get off this island!
Maryann: I know. No more sandy hair.
Ginger: No more chipped nails.
Maryann: And, as Davy Crockett said as he killed the last indian, no more red skin!
That's horrible! I was quite agast!

That BOGGLES the MIND! I bet they won't that one too many more times.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 31 January 2003 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
I love hate the fact that all those early '90s Stone Roses fans went round wearing "Reni" hats 'cause they thought it was SO COOL but no one ever noticed that it was also the Gilligan hat!
