How do I find the mean expected result of a function over a known range? Like, say I have f(x) = x^2 or something, what's the expected value for 0 < x < 1 ? Is this an integration thing?

you should've asked me that in 2005. I could've told you.

integrate the function from 0 to 1 ---> the integral is x^3/3 so 1/3 - 0/3 = 1/3
divide by (1-0)
average is 1/3

amirite?
