'Maryann' unaccountably overlooked - Scientist also snubbed

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip,
That started from this tropic port,
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day,
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this uncharted desert isle,
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too,
The millionaire and his wife,
The movie star,
And The Rest,
Here on Gilligans Isle.

There's two versions, now do you see?

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Why DID they change it to 'and the rest' - or was there a popular outcry, resulting in them including the professor and Maryann?

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i dont think there are two versions i dont remember one any others anyways

Chief 2 Tone (Chief 2 Tone), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Since then, in what became preparation and inspiration for this sermon, the conversation has come up a few times, most notably in an email from UUCSS'er Jim Paoletti sent me following that conversation. In that email, whereby he forwarded information from his wife Jo, he gave me what has become, perhaps sadly, the most handy way I have so far heard to remember all seven - as characters from Gilligan's Island. Pride is represented by the Professor; Envy: Maryann; Wrath: the Skipper; Sloth: Mrs. Howell; Greed: Mr. Howell; Gluttony: the Skipper (again!); and Lust: Ginger. As Jim pointed out, this leaves out Gilligan, who, he concluded, must be SATAN! Yes, this is some of the lofty reflection your minister engages in with parishioners during the week.

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Why did that happen?

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, Maryann got left out to make her more envious, and the scientist got left out to make him less proud.

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

A nationwide survey of college students a few years ago revealed that the professor and Maryann were voted the most likely couple to have 'done it' on the island.

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What about the millionaire and his wife!

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It was the original version where their names are left out. Perhaps they weren't sure whether the characters would be kept on.

maryann (maryann), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the next version better.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Was it really that hard to include two more characters in the theme song? Did the person who wrote it dislike Maryann and the Professor or something?

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

grrr

the professor (doorag), Thursday, 12 December 2002 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i love maryann-girl next door kind of thing- and the prof was a damn pimp. he could build anything out of fuckin coconuts-i wish i could do that

Chief 2 Tone (Chief 2 Tone), Monday, 16 December 2002 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I was listening to the theme today off a tv themes record i'd kind of forgotten I had, Maryann and the professor are both present.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 16 December 2002 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i've got that record! if it's the same one (double album, "Television's Greatest Hits", right?) - it's great! even tho it has lots of themes of american shows i never even saw.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes that's the one! Yeah not much on it does much for nostalgic memories of TV for me either, but I like it. I've been mixing up Popeye/Gilligan's Is. all day. It has Get Smart on it! I used to love that show!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 17 December 2002 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i just watched (part of) gilligan's island for the 1st time since they been re-running it & i turned on the tv during the theme song & it is a really obviously different arrangement of the song to the one on that album. i didnt hear whether maryann & the prof got mentioned 'cause i didnt hear the whole thing but i'm assuming this is the version where they don't.
man that show IS really terrible, i watched about 10 min's of it & there wasn't a single joke that was remotely funny. i hate TV anyway tho, i can't even watch shows that are any good without wanting to wander off & do something else.

(doorag), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"9 9 99". Get Smart yay!

ducklingmonster, Wednesday, 18 December 2002 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that mean Get Smart is back on?

maryann (maryann), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Not any more. It's not as good as I remembered anyway.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 18 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Little known fact that the original script called for three other castaways. A Mexican man that was to be the millionaire man servent, a small boy named Cooper and his puppy dog Astro. Hence the verse "...and the rest." was used due to strict time constraints imposed by the FCC on late 60's television prime time shows. Just prior to the filming of the first episode the boy was written off the show because of a chicken pox outbreak leaving him scarred and the butler removed due to the desires of the racist powers that be.

It reminds me of how on the Brady Bunch they had three blonde boys and three brunette girls lined up as well so they could juggle them around with the hair colours of the actors testing for the parents, see which combination looked best
