I have also done a Tiny Tim-esque solo cover of I Remember You by Frank Ifield. Forgot to take out the click track or even master it properly, but I think it adds to the jokesness http://www.myspace.com/mightysandyheathtransmitters

Audacity click track! One day someone's going to make a song where that's the only percussion, although it'll probably just sound like "Da Da Da".

Also, what MP3 player are you using? Just wondering as when I try doing field recordings on mine it sounds like garbage.
― snoball, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 21:43 (sixteen years ago) link
Creative Zen Vision M. I've only been using it for the Belligerent Aunt jams though. The Mighties is all recorded on computer using Audacity or Acid Pro and a Shure SM-58 for the vocals. I tend to record guitar straight into the soundcard as when I use an amp it gives off a ridiculous amount of hiss and buzz.

just finished a new song! it's really simple but i like it, you can listen here if you want: http://www.myspace.com/clonefeed. the song's called "Jellyfish"

This shouldn't count for "what do you sound like" but it's amusing so I'll post it here. As part of an exhibit on art and rock & roll at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, my band "rehearsed" in one of the artworks on Saturday. The artwork is a replication of the artist's old rehearsal space. It's supposed to be silent, with the instruments running directly into a mixer and electronic drums, and people can listen to the mix through headphones, but as you will hear, the vocals are obviously not silent:

― Jordan, Monday, 29 October 2007 17:46 (sixteen years ago) link
I need to sit down and plow through this thread's links sometime. I just opened up latebloomer's "Jellyfish" just to get started and it's great! Love the energy level on all the Clonefeed tracks really. Are vocals in the future? These feel wonderfully like karaoke tracks from my next favorite band.
The Chubs McKenzie beats are nice too. Somehow I keep wanting them to be LODUER, which you'd think would be solved by me turning up the volume but somehow it isn't. Maybe I'm just craving more of the everything-besides-the-drums part of the sound, dunno.
"Baby When I Found Out" is cool. No guess at all on the sample but it sounds weirdly familiar in a good way.
negotiable, if you're out there, I'm very curious about your Acid mixy project as it sounds a lot like mine! The mainline Doctor Casino recording project is a little bit on the back burner right now, but: http://www.myspace.com/djaktorcosimo , I have been doing little mega-mashups in the Girl Talk tradition as a sort of diversion this school year...I somehow can't focus enough to work on my own songs so this is kind of fun in the meantime. Link from there to the Doctor Casino stuff if you're interested in my keyboard folk too.
Sample list o' samples (from "Hours & Hours")
Generation X, “Ready Steady Go” - Helium, “Lady Of The Fire” - Hall & Oates, “Portable Radio” - Pras, “Ghetto Supastar” - Fats Domino, “I’m Gonna Be A Wheel Some Day” - Jerry Reed (???), “When You Hot, You Hot” - Paul McCartney, “Temporary Secretary” - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, “Rag Doll” - Love Tractor, “I Broke My Saw” - Mark Morrison, “Return of the Mack” - De La Soul, “All Good” - Notorious BIG, “Mo Money Mo Problems” - Men At Work, “It’s A Mistake” - Percy Thrillington, “Monkberry Moon Delight” - Britney Spears, “Slave 4 U” - George Clinton, “Atomic Dog”
It's fun!

er...that should be "LOUDER" up there, although LODUER sort of sums it up too.

Hey hey I play bass in another band and we've just got the masters back from our album. You can hear three tracks at the website, or at the myspace.

I spent an eternity trying to get all the notes just right, but I will be using this from Kirby's Adventure in a song for my NaSoAlMo project. (This is the stage music from the Grape Garden level).

I am in a rock band. We have been playing shows for a year and a half or so. Sometimes people see us and say that we sound good but that we need more "stage presence." I guess they mean we should move around more and be more exciting. But we worry about THINKING too much about what we are doing on stage, that it will come across as too fakey and thought-out. So how do you approach "stage presence"? Can you develop it?

though there was no drinking in that video because it was like 11 a.m.

but if it was taped at night you totally would have been drinking on the kids show.

The vocals are a bit difficult to hear during the verses. Maybe take off some of the reverb and bring them forward in the mix? Chorus sounds good and I like the piano.

Some of us (they didn't want my glockenspiel non-skills, and our drummer lives too far away) put together a version of Last Christmas. 'We' then decided not to acually tell anyone, although it's supposedly going to be on some indie clubnight's xmas cd. It'd be a shame if no-one heard it though...

the songs could maybe use some more development in the drums though? it makes them seem kind of static.
― Jordan, Friday, 28 December 2007 16:05 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah we were at the point of pulling our hair out and just wanting to be *done* with those particular demos so programming took a back seat near the end there. i totally agree that that drums probably need to be redone from scratch on all those tunes

Margins = fantastic. I can't work out if the production is terrible or awesome, in a Russian Futurists kind of way. Any chance I could remix "Never Too Late". It gives me all kinds of ideas.

― Hurting 2, Saturday, 29 December 2007 05:11 (sixteen years ago) link
thanks so much lynskey! (although i have to ask, what elements sway you towards 'terrible'? we are always looking for ways to make our music a little less terrible.) you are absolutely welcome and encouraged to remix it; what would you need to do so? the multitrack, or just an mp3? i think you can download an mp3 from the myspace; if not, or that's not what you need, just send a message on our site. thanks again!
― uptown churl, Saturday, 29 December 2007 11:48 (sixteen years ago) link
EQ is boxy, the attributes of any reverb used seem to be pretty random, separation is woeful, vocals sound like the singer is trying to hide under a table in case anyone notices who he is, the dynamics suck, the distorted guitar sound has about as much prescence as an anemic ghost, that keyboard bass sound needs throwing down the nearest volcano, where's your snares at? . . . .
HOWEVER there's several serendipitous moments where it just seems to work really well, which is probably down to the strength of the ideas present more than anything. If you could send me the bits (and please send the vocals without verb) that'd be awesome. My emails in my profile.
