thx. I was pretty surprised at how decent I could get the Garage Band synths to sound, especially the drums.
I wound up changing the mix a bit - I think the repeated piano pattern gets a little harsh so I pulled it down a little. I may turn it into a multi-part proggy suite I think. It's my first effort toward that RPM challenge thing.

Are the drums live or Garage Band?
― Jordan, Monday, 4 February 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link
i really just love GarageBand, and it surprises me
― Surmounter, Monday, 4 February 2008 22:40 (sixteen years ago) link
Drums are GarageBand, inputted with a keyboard (as in piano keyboard) interface

everything is garage band

Oh, I see, it was only the dynamics that made me think they might be live.

Surmounter--that's a cool sound! Did you sample the voice or the strings or is everything from scratch?
― Jubalique die Zitronen, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:17 (sixteen years ago) link
it's really just from scratch! scratch being anything and everything u can futz with in GarageBand :-)
― Surmounter, Thursday, 7 February 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago) link
surmounter, that's pretty awesome, must say.
So wait, did you record your own voice and mess with it?

mostly finished mix of one of the songs that will be on our album. we're still in the mixing process, which is the part i hate the most. basic guitar/bass tracks were recorded live w/ 2 drummers, vocals/gtr overdubs added later

^^sounds pretty cool once all the drum parts come in
― Jordan, Thursday, 14 February 2008 15:49 (sixteen years ago) link
Sounds like a great recording, 6335. I wouldn't stress too much over the mixing. You've got good tracks, that's the most important thing.
And that was cool, m bison. I like the stereo hi-hats.

My first (and so far only song):
http://www.myspace.com/stepdaughtersca
Heavy Pet Shop Boys/New Order influence.
Advice/criticism would be appreciated (pls don't be to harsh though, this was done entirely on midi with not very good quality sounds; I'm just starting).
― daavid, Friday, 15 February 2008 06:08 (sixteen years ago) link
My next song will sound even more Pet Shop Boys.
― daavid, Friday, 15 February 2008 06:09 (sixteen years ago) link
get rid of those claps or replace with tight synth sound! otherwise the song writing is good!
― Crackle Box, Friday, 15 February 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link
OK thanks, that makes sense.

WHERE ARE MY "MARGINS"???????
― Lynskey, Saturday, 16 February 2008 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link
i'm really into this song, david. it definitely sounds like it's influenced by New Order.
the synth/bass is completely great. the strings(?) feel right but could do with a little bit of variation. maybe u could blend them with a nice background synth in parts?
the percussion is fine, especially when you play with it, but the drums sound canned. but this might just be myspace sound.
the melody is really nice, and i like the epic feel of it, like it's taking its time until it gets to the chorus. but the vox should be clearer, and they should cut through the mix more. maybe with a phaser at times to vary up their position in the sound. i'd also just like to understand what you're singing better.
also, you could do with a little more oomph on the "i'm gonna be a star" line cuz it is one that can sound tired. i mean, i LIKE it, but at that point in the song, it feels like you could have a little more impact. i do think, though, that this could be achieved through singing the lyric a bit differently, if you're not up for altering the actual words.

or electric guitar?
― Surmounter, Saturday, 16 February 2008 02:19 (sixteen years ago) link
Wow! thanks a lot Surmounter. That's definitely the most comprehensive and IMO best piece of advice I've heard so far! I had a very limited palette of sounds I could use, yet I admit my limitations are precisely in the beat/drums section and the vocals; I mean, recording vocals is incredibly difficult. Like you did, I also felt like I wanted something else than the background synth strings at some points, but I just didn't know what to use. Overall I think I need to learn to "produce". Again, thanks a lot!

of course :-)

haha, i didn't know your opinion of ilx was quite that low.
both the remixes i've listened to so far sound awesome (tom's & n/a's).

based on a quick scan, mine in easily the worst. not being falsely modest, still pretty proud of mine since i don't really know how to do remixes at all. just the quality seems high across the board
The top two tracks currently on my myspace page are from the album I did for the RPM 08 challenge. For a project slapped together just because I could I think they turned out pretty decent.
