Here's my holiday cover:

And with this, I've met my goal of releasing a song each month in 2012.

This is my church choir from our concert this past October; I'm the baritone soloist that comes in around 7:15

'Fun Police'
'Knob of Butter' (a comedy song about Erectile Dysfunction, so mildly NSFW)

did a remix for a friend who made a song with some Ghanaian mc's and singers, it's the closest i've come to making a straight rap production (without many of the elements that i've come to think of as 'my sound'):

Steve your song reminds me heavily of TMBG and I hope that isnt an insult becaue it really isnt, it is a compliment!

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Saturday, 15 December 2012 11:23 (twelve years ago)

(sorry I mean Narccisist)

Una Stubbs' Tears (Trayce), Saturday, 15 December 2012 11:24 (twelve years ago)

OK so anyway again, Im not someone who indulges in this thread cos I'm not a practiscing muso like most of you but lately Ive had mates who are, helping me out with backing tracks.

Here's one my friend Aaron did earlier that I did vocals on tonight that I'm happy with the result of: I'm startng to get the hang of EQ I thnk.

ie: he sent me the track, I came up with the vox and recorded/mixed em.

Cheers Trayce, not an insult at all!

I've made this first draft of a kind of deep house version/quasi-edit of Cymande's Brothers on the Slide, but it needs... something. If any of you know what, please to let me know, thanks.

IT'S HERE, BY THE WAY

formerly EDB (ed.b), Monday, 24 December 2012 15:11 (twelve years ago)

The drum machine (especially the snare and shaker) is drowning out the rest of the instruments, and needs to be mixed lower in volume so the rest of the track can breathe.

yeah, this is great, like some epic kraftwerk shit

Rolling "2 chainz" draadje (The Reverend), Friday, 28 December 2012 08:11 (twelve years ago)

That's sorta my goal. Heavily influenced by first generation uk techno/IDM and the prettier side of vintage Detroit/Chicago techno and house with Mir of a new wave/kraut rock vibe combined with a bit of experimentation and incompetence.

dan selzer, Friday, 28 December 2012 14:52 (twelve years ago)

incompetence is always a good seasoning when used lightly

Rolling "2 chainz" draadje (The Reverend), Friday, 28 December 2012 17:48 (twelve years ago)

I gave an old track a bit of a mix, sharpened the arrangement and put some hats at the beginning (for DJs). Lots of pianos/electric pianos and a little Justin Timberlake vocal. You can download it if you so desire.

Can you tell us a bit about how you recorded that? Synths? Guitar feedback? Contact mics on a motorcycle? It sounds kid of like all of those but I can't figure out how it was done.

pure dressed up like a white ninja (snoball), Saturday, 12 January 2013 10:21 (twelve years ago)

Contact mics on a motorcycle?

ooh i like this idea

we recorded some engine revs not long ago and it was a very satisfying result

trayce war (electricsound), Saturday, 12 January 2013 10:22 (twelve years ago)

I clipped one of these cheap clip-on contact mics

http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop_image/product/4351-korg-cm100-contact-mic-for-tuners-large.jpg

onto a sabian china cymbal on a carpeted floor, with the mic sort of squished between the cymbal and the floor. I ran it through some compression + distortion but didn't do any knob tweaking during; the sounds you hear are just my doing different things to the cymbal. The rapid-fire engine sound is just me twitching my hand near the mic/pressing the cymbal lightly into the carpet. I ran it through my bass amp and propped up my Zoom H4n so it was right in front of the subwoofer.

crüt, Saturday, 12 January 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)

for those of you who like motorcycle engine sounds I recommend Un Chien Catalan by Vagina Dentata Organ

crüt, Saturday, 12 January 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)

xp great stuff.
I recorded this in the middle of last year. A homemade contact mic taped to an inkjet printer, put through effects, including a pitch correction plug-in that outputs MIDI notes, controlling a soft synth.

fantastic!

crüt, Saturday, 12 January 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

Well, it ain't printer music (cool shit snoball i like your stuff) but here is a dubby techno house song my partner and I made last year that I've recently come back to. It samples Nico Fidenco and a finnish folk tune.

can't listen while i'm at work, but nice song selection! it's a stone cold classic that relatively few people have heard

Z S, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 18:41 (twelve years ago)

yeah, and it is just two chords, so that helps too! i think our version turned out OK, it's an iphone basement recording gussied up in garageband, so nothing fancy.
listening to the thing crackle box posted, kind of great!

tylerw, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)

nice tylerw, you the singer? sounds pretty good for an iphone recording.

sonderangerbot, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 19:07 (twelve years ago)

yeah the original recording is just me on guitars/vocals and the drummer, but i added bits and bobs (and a doubled vocal) later. i too am sort of surprised at how nice the quality is! we just put the iphone over on the washing machine and play. modern technology!

I want it to have echo and atmospheric stuff

Brian Eno's Mother (Latham Green), Friday, 25 January 2013 19:07 (twelve years ago)

yeah i hope to use a recording device that isn't a phone in the future! but yeah i agree, i think if i try to *really* record i'm going to have to do some sort of distinctive production, my playing isn't good enough for a straight-up "close mic'd acoustic guitar" sound

mh (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 25 January 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

you should just throw the iphone tracks in Garageband (or whatever DAW you have available) and experiment with some mixing/effects/background textures. i'm a big fan of lo-fi, carelessly recorded elements mixing with clean in-the-box synths or whatever.

that's very cool, a bit the knife meets xiu xiu (ON ACID!!!!!!).

i just tried to upload something but soundcloud blocked it because it thinks i've plagiarised this

i feel bad about myself.
