This is a great 'middle of side 2' album track. There's no need to strip it back to the loop.
The drop outs at 1:39, 3:46 and 5:00 are a little distracting and upset the vibe a bit. Maybe add a distant reverb-y pad and some extra light percussion in the background from 3:00 onwards to give it a bit more direction. IOW I like the bit in the middle where all the instruments go off except for the organ, and then they fade back in, but a couple of other things need to fade back in with them.

that's really nice. i didn't hear your original track but i feel the pain of that position, having recently stumbled across a nice loop and spending ages adding things that really did little but diminish it, and now feeling the need to undo all of that work to have anything decent to work with again.

i recently rediscovered a bunch of my old recordings and to my surprise found some stuff that i'd like to get back to developing if i could only remember how i did it. this one from i think around 2006 i found quite nice, even if the recording itself is utterly wack: https://soundcloud.com/eeeeeein/dadf-aeacou

Posted this on the other thread, but thought I'd post here too. Any help is appreciated...

Hey all - could I get a little bit of constructive feedback on this please? We've had an initial "how's this?" from the studio engineer on one of our tracks. Overall, I think it's okay but it's very difficult to distance myself and listen to it with uninvolved ears.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts, particularly on the mixing/production (we can't really go back into the studio to do any overdubs or retakes so we're working with the raw material we have, for better or worse). Are there any glaring errors on this track or things I should mention before I get back to him? One thing I noticed is that he's been a bit heavy handed witht he gating and compression, particularly some of the vocal parts where the sibilants and plosives are almost non-existent.

I'm only gonna keep this track online for a short while, but if someone could give it a listen and let me know their thoughts, i'd be very much obliged:

Hey dog latin, I don't think there's anything "wrong" with it from a technical perspective, but it all depends on what you're going for. A different approach could make it sound different. But nothing sounded really weird to me.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Wednesday, 6 March 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

Thanks Steve. Don't think we've got time to make it 'sound different' (can't afford the studio time for one), although I'm not sure if that means you're not keen on the song or the production as a whole ;-) do appreciate you checking it out though man.

Would like some feedback on a new sideproj. for me also.

SK1/vox/bass/tapes all running into and out of a lappy running Audiomulch with MIDI samples. Trying to keep it all 'in the box' so still ironing out kinks in levels/signal flow.

xxp That's impressive. What processing/editing did you do to the sample?

Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Thursday, 4 April 2013 21:57 (twelve years ago)

that is a good idea for a track, Z_S

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Thursday, 4 April 2013 22:15 (twelve years ago)

thanks!

the editing was really simple. i just isolated a 2-3 second long segment of a youtube recording of an orchestra tuning and put a copy on two different tracks. on one of the tracks i time stretched the clip a little bit (making it 4 seconds or so - i ignored the metronome and bpm for this song). then i looped both tracks, with reverb and a little delay. since one of the tracks was a little longer than the other, they fall in and out of phase. then i made copies of those two tracks, and added a little bit of pitchshifting (maybe a fifth up, only 25% wet). so for the first section, it starts with the two tracks phasing against each other, and then gradually over the course of a minute or two the pitchshifted tracks enter the fray in the center channel while the two original tracks divide to the left and right channels, respectively, as they fade out.

then i repeated that whole process two more times, using two other 2-3 second clips from the original recording. so that's an A, B and C section. then i just went with a good old ABCB structure, about 2 minutes for each.

i'm bummed because as usual i put the whole thing together with headphones, and it sounded nice, and the panning for the various tracks during entries and exits helped to define the "movements" more clearly. but on laptop speakers and ipod headphones, all of that is lost, and the shifting bass tones in the B section are pretty much inaudible. so it'll sound like a muddy mess pretty much 90% of the time that anyone ever listens to it. luckily that'll only be 15 or so plays!

listening to your music on a shitty car stereo (like mine) or phone/laptop speakers can be a crushing experience.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)

(and yes theres a glitch at the start of the track, no idea why)

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)

I get the same kind of glitches whenever I render a track in REAPER as an MP3 (using the LAME codec). It doesn't happen every time, and when it does it's in different places, but usually at the beginning. One of the reasons I switched to using FLACs instead.

Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

Yes thats exactly it! I built the base music in FLstudio, rendered that to a wav, added that wav to my Reaper file with my vox etc, then when I rendered THAT to mp3 it fucked up. In the same spot each time! Even when I re rendered the base music!?

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:59 (twelve years ago)

Anyway I'd like to know what anyone interested thinks of my track :) its the first time I have written/sung a full track all on my lonesome.
