Stuff from the last three years or so - eight songs and three instrumental pieces:

i had a grand idea of combining a few different clips of orchestras tuning up into one long composition. i got really into the first clip i found and made this instead:

xxp That's impressive. What processing/editing did you do to the sample?

that is a good idea for a track, Z_S
― pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Thursday, 4 April 2013 22:15 (eleven years ago) link
thanks!
the editing was really simple. i just isolated a 2-3 second long segment of a youtube recording of an orchestra tuning and put a copy on two different tracks. on one of the tracks i time stretched the clip a little bit (making it 4 seconds or so - i ignored the metronome and bpm for this song). then i looped both tracks, with reverb and a little delay. since one of the tracks was a little longer than the other, they fall in and out of phase. then i made copies of those two tracks, and added a little bit of pitchshifting (maybe a fifth up, only 25% wet). so for the first section, it starts with the two tracks phasing against each other, and then gradually over the course of a minute or two the pitchshifted tracks enter the fray in the center channel while the two original tracks divide to the left and right channels, respectively, as they fade out.
then i repeated that whole process two more times, using two other 2-3 second clips from the original recording. so that's an A, B and C section. then i just went with a good old ABCB structure, about 2 minutes for each.
i'm bummed because as usual i put the whole thing together with headphones, and it sounded nice, and the panning for the various tracks during entries and exits helped to define the "movements" more clearly. but on laptop speakers and ipod headphones, all of that is lost, and the shifting bass tones in the B section are pretty much inaudible. so it'll sound like a muddy mess pretty much 90% of the time that anyone ever listens to it. luckily that'll only be 15 or so plays!

listening to your music on a shitty car stereo (like mine) or phone/laptop speakers can be a crushing experience.

So hey again, I'm no muso but I've been working hard on writing and improving my songwrtiting and I'd be interested on feedback here, I know it'll be harsh. I know the mix is shit - that side of things I'm still learning. So put that aside and any comments welcome.

(and yes theres a glitch at the start of the track, no idea why)
― It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:46 (eleven years ago) link
I get the same kind of glitches whenever I render a track in REAPER as an MP3 (using the LAME codec). It doesn't happen every time, and when it does it's in different places, but usually at the beginning. One of the reasons I switched to using FLACs instead.
― Will you see a political publicity stunt? (snoball), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:51 (eleven years ago) link
Yes thats exactly it! I built the base music in FLstudio, rendered that to a wav, added that wav to my Reaper file with my vox etc, then when I rendered THAT to mp3 it fucked up. In the same spot each time! Even when I re rendered the base music!?
― It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 13:59 (eleven years ago) link
Anyway I'd like to know what anyone interested thinks of my track :) its the first time I have written/sung a full track all on my lonesome.
― It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 14:01 (eleven years ago) link
the music and songwriting are both great, some of the vocal harmonies sound a little off but harmonies are hard. if it was my song i'd make it a little shorter/tighter by cutting a verse but that's not a reflection on the song, just my personal preference.
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link
The instrumental bit between 2:40 and 3:15 could be a bit shorter, as well as the outro from ~4:10.

Ta guys - yeah harmonies can be a bitch. Ive also cut and shuffled the song heaps as it is, never sure how to make things end properly! It is just a demo tho. I'll nail all that eventually.

crut i want to set up giganto speakers in a cave and blast untitled no 5 out of the left channel and metal machine music out of the right with slow LFOs on the volume on each channel

untitled no 5 made me remember something i had totally forgotten (i think i have memory problems for real), one of the best times of my life: sledding down a really steep snow-covered country road at midnight, over and over, with dozens of torn-up drunk high schoolers. we attained incredible and dangerous speeds within about 10 seconds of the descent, and then after about 30 seconds the snow would get so thin on the road that the metal runners would emit firework sparks as they grated at a ferocious volume. it sounded just like this track. <3

Been going on a hardware binge recently. Why? because it intersting.
Anyway, made my first live hardware only track, 'Macrobiotic Jam' (Well, I used a little bit of Ableton for sequencing and EQing/compressing). Hardware used: 707, x0xb0x, tx81z, Monotron Delay, and several guitar pedals.
