here's a track from a new project i did with two drummer friends, the idea was to make dance music with just percussion sounds that we recorded together:

http://soundcloud.com/artsextract/calabash-boom-hisarna

the mixes came out sounding a little bit more 'polite' than i intended, but it was fun to make and i'm glad we saw the concept through.

i love it!! esp when the bass kicks in

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Monday, 22 September 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link

thanks LL, the bass on that track is this gigantic, rickety, bootleg-looking bass kalimba that one of the dudes got at a thrift store.

that's great!

ha, if you want to drive to the wastelands of northern wisconsin, i'll let you know the next time we record. that was the most fun part, it had been awhile since i've had to consider how to mic something.

thanks dudes.

i would definitely consider it!

Hey so did I ever post this before? A quick thread scan says no: I did this cover of a Split Enz song some time back, and it seems to have real good feedback from muso friends, so thought I'd post it here.

LL I admit I was v puzzled coz when I click that link I get five minutes of just drums (upload date last year), but now that I've found the actual one, this is v cool!

I've been musically inactive for ages because I've had the template for some kind of electro ballad in my head but with no ability to realise it, so instead I noodled over the top of its droney foundation and now I can abandon it https://soundcloud.com/eeeeeein/lfsj5

huge whoops there! i went back to the old one to see how it sounded and must've accidentally posted the wrong link. glad you found the right one!

and thanks everybody!! i'm kinda glad i don't know all the rules about when i should be embarrassed about what i've made/shared because it means i can feel genuinely good when i get any feedback. anything is good because 'audience of one' songs are my specialty at the moment.

two weeks pass...

i struggled with the mix on this one. i mixed most of it while on headphones, and then yelped in agony when i listened to it on speakers. depending on whether you listen to it on headphones, laptop speakers, apple earbuds, or regular speakers, the vocals are either way too loud or buried, and the organ drone is appropriately loud or inaudible. i give up.

high quality jam! you're fortunate to have jovial people near you to jam with. sounds like a good time!!

vigetable (La Lechera), Thursday, 11 December 2014 13:58 (nine years ago) link

i made the beat for this rap song.

i wish i had gotten to have a hand in the vocal mix...on the one hand it was nice not to have to worry about it, and the engineer did a great job punching up my 808s, but i feel like it's overly busy. i would have taken the chopped vocal samples out of my beat and argued for less backing vox during the verses, but whatevs.

Opening track sounded like something from The Goon Show. I half expected Peter Sellers to say something like "Ach! No more high fibre diet!".

haha, it's entirely improvised - just one take and one mic with no script. there are some pretty absurd moments on there

For anyone curious I used a Bass Station II, u-he Diva, TAL U-NO-LX, and Matrix 6 for synths (these and guitar through a Strymon El Capistan), and an MXL V67G for vocals.

made this little dancey song with a bobbie gentry sample, a drum machine and some keyboards. i don't usually do dancey stuff like this so i really have no idea what i'm doing.
