can i make a request?
can we not post links without a little explanation or introduction or something? i think a tiny bit of context will increase the value of this valuable thread imo.

Sorry, LL. Astralpop is all about the listener's interpretation. So, I'm just about presenting my music with as little context as possible.

But, since you asked, it's a new single for winter solstice.

even just a few words like "here's something i made" would be nice so it's not a blind link to another website that one needs to click to know what it is. speaking only for myself, i am more likely to click a link when i know what it is.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 21 December 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

most music is about the listener's interpretation no? :)

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 21 December 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

Totally agree, I mostly post things here so I can add the backstory about the insecurities and challenges involved, which I wouldn't post elsewhere. And I enjoy hearing about other people's travails as well.

when i post things it's usually because you all are the only people on earth who i share it with, other than a guy i played in a band with back in high school

Karl Malone, Friday, 21 December 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

i post here when i am feeling nervy, and it's a place i feel safe being heard.

i know that most of the stuff i record is kinda half-baked -- i meant to say it earlier but I like random collaborations. if someone has a weird urge to add something to one of my tracks, please be my guest. they're only me solo because i don't have other people to play with most of the time. :)

I'm at work, so something tells me I should hold off on listening to that one until this afternoon.🙂

Xmas jazz gig, once again backing up trumpeter Ler0y J0nes. It went much better than I feared, but seeing some other clips back, I both play ahead of the beat & make stupid faces more often than I would like.

Happy new year everyone. Thank you all for being who you are. Just fantastic people, all of you.🙂

This is a thing I've been working on since finishing MENTAL ILLNESS. It came to me really quickly in comparison to MENTAL ILLNESS. Some of the songs on there were literally years old, but all of the spectral projections songs were created after MENTAL ILLNESS. It's been a really liberating process for me to begin and complete something in a matter of a couple weeks that I'm this happy with. I do feel like, as a whole, this is the best thing I've ever done.

Here's a somewhat narrative slideshow, with spectral 6 as the soundtrack: https://youtu.be/7x6rX-IhGRQ

Thank you again, everyone. ilx contributed to saving my life in 2017 and 2018. I'm serious.

New MSS out today as well as the latest weirder VHHP collaborative project. It's more of the usual noise drone experiments if that floats your boat.

DJI, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 18:20 (five years ago) link

I updated a song I posted upthread. Tried re-recording some of the vocals and tweaking a few things. I'm still not 100% sure it's finished and I guess I never will. It's mainly the vocals I have trouble with - I guess they're deliberately incongruous but I still want them to fit in with the track like they do in my mind's eye

Any more feedback very welcome - especially re: production. I'm using an old version of Reason, so I can't use plugins sadly.

I love it, dog latin. You've posted a version previously, right? Very British folk rock. Delicious.

Something something new things I did over the weekend.

Cheers Austin - yeah I did post a previous version before.

I made this little bit of hyper-distorted freeform DFA madness the other day: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1SQF-I3_U4-binD1UapBmU8Ss42XGQf0D

Not sure if I'll be doing anything else with it. The vocals are adlibbed in one take. It's bonkers fun. I kinda like it even though it's a bit slap-dash

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 7 February 2019 20:36 (five years ago) link

This is very cool. I love the way you've got these sort of poly-rhythms bubbling away with much more drawn out guitar layers. Reminds me at once of Panda Bear and maybe a bit of My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts.

haha is that a good thing? i generally don't like it when people compare my stuff to other acts, mostly because it's inaccurate. my old band used to get Super Furry Animals all the time, but they were never an influence

Well, first of all, you compared it to actual, "real", professionally made music, which I take as a compliment unto itself; I record in my bedroom, so yeah. And then, you compared it to one of the most influential albums of the past 40 years (in a positive way), which is amazing.

Ergo,

guys, online backup. $5/ month to never have to worry about this happening is dollar-per-value-unit more worth it than any kind of insurance i've ever paid for. for literal decades i never had a hard drive crash that entirely fucked my life up and derailed several ppl's projects/careers... until i did :0 never again!

Or go the opposite route, never connect your computer to the internet and it'll last forever

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 8 February 2019 20:48 (five years ago) link

Although I was recently doing the last pass of edits on the last song on my album, and got a BSoD out of nowhere. Never happened before. I screamed, and briefly contemplated the possibly that the song and my sample banks were lost forever.

Then I restarted, found my auto-save from 10 min before, and re-did the edits.

(also I do have manual backups on an external drive, but only do that every few weeks when it occurs to me, so yeah)

What service do you recommend?

I was stressed out about it for the first few days, then took a zen approach of nothing lasts forever. Having said that, I needed an outlet for my frustration so I decided to make a CSS for this site just to keep me busy while I plan on what to do next.

the sound of space, Friday, 8 February 2019 21:34 (five years ago) link

i've been using b4ckblaze, it's sweet. unlimited backup, syncs every night or whenever i tell it to. already had to do one large restore with it and no problems (other than isp overages for moving ~3tb data)

css: nite mode plx? :)

Nice! That was Tom's Guide's value pick for 2019. Their top pick was IDrive. I'll give it a few days before deciding which one to go with.

I'm using this particular CSS as a user stylesheet with the Stylus extension on Chrome, and I'm happy with it!

It's not a dark theme but, if you want, I can change the colors on it quickly to dark grays :-)
