You guys are making a lot of interesting stuff!
Right now I don't sound like anything because my hard drive died, and it had all my sound bank and tracks :-(

guys, online backup. $5/ month to never have to worry about this happening is dollar-per-value-unit more worth it than any kind of insurance i've ever paid for. for literal decades i never had a hard drive crash that entirely fucked my life up and derailed several ppl's projects/careers... until i did :0 never again!

Or go the opposite route, never connect your computer to the internet and it'll last forever

Although I was recently doing the last pass of edits on the last song on my album, and got a BSoD out of nowhere. Never happened before. I screamed, and briefly contemplated the possibly that the song and my sample banks were lost forever.
Then I restarted, found my auto-save from 10 min before, and re-did the edits.
(also I do have manual backups on an external drive, but only do that every few weeks when it occurs to me, so yeah)

What service do you recommend?
I was stressed out about it for the first few days, then took a zen approach of nothing lasts forever. Having said that, I needed an outlet for my frustration so I decided to make a CSS for this site just to keep me busy while I plan on what to do next.

i've been using b4ckblaze, it's sweet. unlimited backup, syncs every night or whenever i tell it to. already had to do one large restore with it and no problems (other than isp overages for moving ~3tb data)
css: nite mode plx? :)

Nice! That was Tom's Guide's value pick for 2019. Their top pick was IDrive. I'll give it a few days before deciding which one to go with.
I'm using this particular CSS as a user stylesheet with the Stylus extension on Chrome, and I'm happy with it!
It's not a dark theme but, if you want, I can change the colors on it quickly to dark grays :-)

I was messing around with a beat I programmed this afternoon and then realised I could have a go at singing Bjork over it, so I did:

DJI- I wish I could play drums! Alas, just loops. I state where they came from in the individual song info on bandcamp.
Here's something else:

so is that the best way to release something that samples someone else's work? i have a song that samples a bar of drums and i'd like to release it as part of my album but i'm not sure if that sort of attribution is enough. doubting it will ever be heard by much more than immediate friends but still don't want to be a dick about it.
― Heez, Monday, 18 February 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link
Is it an old/classic break or from a newer work? Honestly it doesn't matter these days unless real money is involved, but if it's a blatant/recognizable sample then giving credit is nice, especially if it's from someone who's still working.
― change display name (Jordan), Monday, 18 February 2019 20:23 (five years ago) link
yeah, it's a cuban beat... not hugely recognizable, but they are currently working (and well paid i assume). i guess i'm wondering if it ever becomes an issue if i put it in the marketplace like spotify/itunes
― Heez, Monday, 18 February 2019 20:47 (five years ago) link
Not unless they hear it and want money, which won't happen unless it pops off and, y'know, makes a boatload of money.

I like this Austin. Very dreamy! Nice counterpoint guitar tones. Little bit shoegazey, but not obviously so... Makes me think of something on Everything's Alright Forever, one of those hazy hot tunes.
DJI - this is great too. Lovely sorta Balearic-meets-Krautrock vibes. Really really nice

Thank you, everyone!
I figure I'm a guy that records in my bedroom and posts music for free, with the intention of never accepting a single penny for any recording of my music. . . so, I'm not too worried. The two or three folks that download anytime I put something new up will be devastated when the lawsuits from Van Morrison, the James Bown estate, etc., etc. start showing up. I figure it's not me playing the drums, so I should probably give credit.
And, with that, here's something else entirely: https://austinato.bandcamp.com/track/38
It's part of this, which I think will probably be ongoing for quite some time. I'm not exactly sure what it is, yet.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 19 February 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link
i think that's a good attitude, austin! i have always been very liberal about reusing elements of other people's work in my own, but that's because i always try to place it in a new context rather than just straight up ripping something off, and i'm not making any money off of anything. on the rare occasion that i get commissions or get invited to show something in public, i only use my own elements. if i ever did use someone else's work in something that would earn me money, i would get their permission first.
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 16:34 (five years ago) link
i would get their permission first.
Essentially what it amounts to.👍🏻

Of course, I tactfully avoid this tricky situation by never making money for creative work

― Heez, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link
yeah, exactly - I mean, it depends on what you're doing. recently some dude wanted to use conferencecall.biz as part of his live performance so he contacted me ahead of time and of course i was cool with it. but the james brown estate is probably going to tell you to fuck off
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link
the ease of doing something doesn't really relate to whether or not it's the right thing to do. asking permission is clearly the right thing to do. if it is difficult and you think your request for permission may be denied, why not use something else or make your own thing or whatever?
― weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 February 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link
well i have asked, just haven't heard back. the funny thing is that it's something i added very late to the song and could take it off very easily (it's just played on the outro) or even make a different version of the beat but it sounds sooooooo good and i love it. but i also didn't perform it or record it so i feel weird using it. anyway, gonna keep trying to get permission for now... just wondering about ppls general feelings about this sort of thing
― Heez, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 20:11 (five years ago) link
I respectfully disagree with La Lechera on whether or not it's clearly the right thing to do, although I will freely acknowledge that I hold a minority viewpoint on these kinds of things. i lean toward cory doctorow's views on copyright. as far as existing laws go, i think the visual arts world's lenient stance on reappropriating material makes much more sense than the music world's version, which just seems bonkers and overly restrictive imo, and way too accommodating to corporations.
with all that said, i totally support the idea that with music, at least, if you intend to profit in any way, or even think it's possible that you would in the future, you MUST get permission first. and if you can't, you should find another way to do it without sampling someone else's music. note that i don't think this is a good situation or that's how the perfect world would operate - there are plenty of visual artists who appropriate things all the time, and it's generally covered by fair use as long as you're doing something creative/artistic with it. and even when you're not (like a lot of richard prince's stuff, arguably), it's often covered by fair use(or not - he is permanently in litigation and there hasn't been a legal consensus). i wish music was like that too, but it's not. copyright is much more restrictive with music. so to prevent yourself from being sued, you have to ask permission first.
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 20:42 (five years ago) link
I agree with both sides to some extent. If you're sampling a recording, you're going to have to contact the artist's label in most cases, so if you're not going to make any real money then it's not even worth alerting them to your existence. And some genres have a proud tradition of sampling, bootlegging, etc. It can still be a controversial topic though, even in terms of making a Bandcamp release of dance remixes/bootlegs of pop songs 'pay what you want'.
On the other hand, I personally go to great lengths to avoid it, and for me it's part of the fun to replay or recreate samples. And if I make a bootleg I won't charge for it, but I don't get mad if others do (especially if it's all-original production).

Xxxxp thanks dog latin! I’ve always loved dance music, used to DJ, etc. it’s super-fun to be making a new type of music (aside from the band I’m in with shakey). The tracks we’ve put out so far are more like b-sides. Im excited about some of the other tracks even more. We got an amazing saxophonist to play on one track, and I have a couple of breakbeat tracks that I’m saving for a later release.
