I don't visit this thread as often as I should, but just listening to the Constant Light album now and it rules.

really lovely stuff, austin!
the 4th track was playing out of my crappy laptop speakers (sorry!) and for a second i thought i was listening to cleaners to venus!

you are a saint for listening!
thank you for the feedback — i am always simultaneously embarrassed and honored when my music gets compared to, like, actual music. i have never heard of cleaners from venus before; a quick google tells me that i have some investigating to do this weekend. double thanks!

Some new weird stuff from me:HEP LAD - EP LAD H
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 5 July 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link
Cool stuff, guys! I've been working on a bunch of electronic tracks, just need to master a bunch of stuff before putting it out as Balboa Park.
esby - I made a trip-hop version of your track that I'm pretty into, but I'm waiting on my cousin to finish some rapping for it, for which I have high hopes.
I've been having a blast with Max4Live MIDI LFOs in Live, attaching them to all sorts of stuff. My latest fave is attaching a random LFO to an arpeggiator Type parameter, so that the arp type changes every couple of bars. This makes for some neat, ever-changing apreggiations.

New recording of a classical guitar duo I wrote last year. The two guitars are in different tunings and mostly play harmonics, with some investigation of the acoustic effects you can get from slightly detuned pitches: https://sund4rsubramanian.bandcamp.com/track/warp

I like that one, I love harmonics and muted string scratches. Also, you probably don't want to hear that it would make good horror soundtrack music (to the laymen's ears).
― change display name (Jordan), Friday, 19 July 2019 20:12 (five years ago) link
I take that as a compliment, actually. I like a lot of horror film scores.

So thanks!
Horror soundtracks are the greatest!!

Ok cool, I just assumed that anyone ensconced in the world of 12 tone/new music/etc would be sick of people hearing their compositions as dissonant horror movie music :)

:) i think horror music is the best. i even started a thread about it! horror soundtracks

Ha, there was a new person at orchestral rehearsal tonight who I'm suspecting is not that used to playing new music. At the end, she commented that "it sounded a bit like a horror movie soundtrack". I asked "the last piece?" She replied "all of them".

Sund4r, I love that stuff. It reminds me of some of that really odd "American primitive" stuff from the late 70s. There was an album by Peter Finger that I recall having a lot of that really sparse harmonic exploration in it. I have no idea about the logistics of that stuff, but I absolutely love the tonality of it. I don't think of it as "horror film" music (probably because I don't watch many films and never have); more like "overcast sky" music — which is a mood I like very much.
As for me, everything else is gone, but don't worry.

wow Peter Finger has got to be one of the grossest names I've heard in a while

Oh wow, thanks. Glad people are enjoying it. I love a lot of American Primitive guitar so that connection is cool. Don't know Peter Finger, though, so thanks for the link.
Although I can be very affected by instrumental music, what I get from it often has to do with abstract sensations and images, not necessarily something that I can associate directly with specific and concrete irl experiences, unless, of course, I have been listening to something for a long time, when I do connect the music to memories. I'm happy to see listeners make connections to moods or scenarios that mean something to them.
I just listened to "don't worry" and enjoyed it. Pleasant mood and grooves, nice guitar tones.

doing the soundtrack for another exhibition tonight, this one is titled "The Aesthetics Of Decay." I don't know if I'm going to do another collaboration like this again - they're a wonderful bunch but their vision is a lot darker and bleaker than the music I want to be making. But I'm really happy with how this has turned out - it would have been really easy and obvious to make a Ben Frost/Tim Hecker rip-off, but instead I've made 24 minutes of spacious ambient music that sounds like this.

i recorded a little melodic doodle of me singing + playing drums because i wanted to hear what i sounded like singing and playing at the same time. definitely borrowed melodies from alex chilton & neil young so i named it accordingly https://soundcloud.com/marshmallowy/outofthepool
idk i am posting because i was afraid to, which was a sign to me that i should do it?

Honestly idk what I sound like — I’ve been playing for 6 years. I think I can do a few things maybe surprisingly well and other things not at all. My general musical experience has not prepared me to self-assess; based on my life experience, its sort of like language development when it’s at the intermediate stage. I need to practice with other people to stretch and build vocabulary and fluency. That I’m aware of. Beyond that, I’m unable to assess.

I’ve uploaded audio and video recordings of a guitar festival performance from August. This is pretty close to the version of the piece I’m completing a studio recording of for an album I hope to release next year.

i've often thought that the only actual application of my music would be as video game music. but even that makes me really uncomfortable nd seems quite a stretch anyway.
sund4r: i like this. maybe this is because it's what i've been into lately, but it reminds me vaguely of glenn branca.
finished the album over the weekend, by the way. i'm really happy with how it turned out: https://austinato.bandcamp.com/album/lasso-lp6
