I enjoy my fratrock covers band more than my main band...

Last night I had a really amazing practice with my 2nd band. We've been together since about mid-September and we play fratrock covers. The practice was the best fun I'd had in ages, everybody was really getting into it, really losing themselves in the music and really giving it their all and I can tell that when we play our first gig on Saturday it's going to be an incredible amount of fun!

This has got me thinking about my other band and how we no longer seem to have much fun whether it's practising, doing gigs or even hanging out. Saying that - the only time we seem to hang out these days is at gigs and practices and even then it's all [serious] band talk. When we're on stage none of the other guys look at each other, the drummer in particular is always grimacing and staring into space!

This band was my first band, we've been going for about 4 years now and I've started wondering when nobody seems to be really enjoying themselves is it actually worth all the time and energy we put into it. I do think we used to have fun but something seems to have changed along the way.

Has anyone else been in this sitution? Can you help me here?

Yeah...

Well, not with a fratrock covers band, but there got to a point where I was enjoying my jokey, silly girly fun side project so much more than my "proper" band that I ended up quitting the proper band.

Making music is supposed to be fun. If it's not, why bother doing it? Bands can go on too long, to the point where it feels like a chore. You have two choices - either you can examine what exactly makes the side project more fun (is it the carefree attitude you take towards the music? the lack of conflict? gigging more?) and try to incorporate more of that into your "proper" band, or else you can transfer your loyalties.

Saying "Look guys, this really isn't much fun any more, do you really want to keep going?" is sometimes the best thing you can do if you're not feeling it.

I'd check with the others to see if they're enjoying it too. Having said that, everytime I've had a clear the air talk of that nature it has released a tidal wave of grievances and we've split up anyway.

But, you know maybe it's the material. All bands go through periods when they're bored with what they play. Maybe it just needs one great new song to remind you all about why you're a good band.

Thanks for the advice. For some reason it takes us ages to get new stuff written but we've recently written two new songs and they're a lot more enjoyable to play than our other stuff, some of which is two years old (one song we've been doing for maybe even three years!)

We've got a bit of money saved up, near enough £1000, so I think we're hoping to go into a studio and maybe do an album of some sorts. It'd be good in a way as we haven't done any recording for about a year now but at the same time I think we maybe need to get a few more new songs written before we do this.

I think now's maybe the time to talk to the others, ask what they want out of it and whether they're actually enjoying it.

Cheers again, Louie

Fun is paramount!

However, I think I'd rather not be in a band than play bad music with fun people or play good music with people I don't like.
