Clean BOOOST

Do I need one? Do any of you use one? I'm sure Martin has something to say about the subject. I'm curious about the analogman beano boost but their site mentions that they were created to work with dark sounding british amps and the only amps I have are a twin and a champ which are both quite bright already. Will a clean boost drive those into nice distortion or just kind of make everything louder?

depends on your headroom realy. if you've got your fender twin on "2" and use the clean boost, it'll just make it louder. If you've got your small marshall combo on 6, it should push things into overdrive nicely.

I would recommend a compressor instead though. You get almost the same thing, but with the added bonus of compression if you need it.

I see. So if I'm using a cranked up champ it might push the preamp a little harder right?

I sat in with a band the other night playing guitar, and the guitarist had a Seymour Duncan Booster which I used for leads. It didn't color the sound, managing to boost the signal without introducing any distortion. I'm going to pick one up next time I see one. Try it out.

xpost yes.

Actually I don't know that I have much to say about boosts :)

It is really common to use a compressor as a kind of clean boost. Some folks use overdrive pedals at very very low settings as a kind of clean (or barely dirty) boost.

I use a boost pedal at the end of my pedal chain, but I use it more as a buffer than an actual amp. (I use a Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso cause it has some other interesting features I like beside boost.)

The Duncan Pickup Booster is amazing. We sell shitloads of them (well, within reasonable expectations of shitloads at least) and everyone who buys it loves it.

The only other clean boost I remember really liking was the Klon Super Hard On, which was named such because it was super hard on your amp. Har-de-har. It was a better pedal than one liner, and if you see one, snap it up.

Is there a Klon Super Hard On? I've heard of the Zvex one but is that a clone of the Klon?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 8 December 2005 06:06 (nineteen years ago)

Oh hell.

That's what I get for posting post-beer. You are correct, I was muddling The Klon Centaur and the Zvex Super Hard-on.

nine months pass...
reviiiiive! i'm sort of interested in a zvex super hard on, or maybe a super duper 2-in-1. anyone got any experience with either of those? i'm definitely looking for a boost of some type, but i'm a little paranoid because my sound is already rather bright and i don't want it to become painfully so. any recommendations?

great pedal for naturally pushing an amp into overdrive, or taking a distorted amp over the top. love it. the later derivatives, like the two-in-one and now the box-of-rock, are merely the SHO circuit in multiple. i've never tried a klon, but i'm curious.

I have a Klon Centaur coming in used, but HOLY FUCK IT COSTS HOW MUCH? is sort of dulling my excitement. Current blue book = $600. WTF?

There are a bunch of pedals with an overdrive and boost built into the same pedal. One of the more famous ones is that Fulltone Fulldrive, which is really kick butt.

Both of the guitarists I play with use this Burriss Boostiest, which is the same idea and built by a guy around here. It sounds pretty good on their setup, but both of them have really nice hand made amps and killer guitars. I think about anything would sound pretty good with their setup.

I think most of those pedals work off of some Tubescreamer like over drive permuation with a clean boost on the other side. It is a pretty cool idea as you can turn an amp with a good clean sound into a three channel setup with one pedal.

I've got a Visual Sound Route 66 pedal, which you can setup the compressor side to give a boost lift. I would not call it a completely clean boost, as it is a bit noisy. Not enough that you would pick it out playing in a band situation, but on your own you notice the hum.

Now that I have a deluxe, I have been curious about Carl Martin's OD/Boost pedal and the Plexitone (which has three setups).

Weird, i'nit? They're like $350 new, which is still a lot but still... guess some folks just hate to wait.

plus i've heard mr klon is a little weird about interviewing you on the phone to make sure you can have is pedal.

also there's a cult that states the earlier klons (gold with painted centaur) are better.

awesome little blues monkey (awesome little blues monkey), Sunday, 17 September 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

The circuit has not changed. That's just vintager/corksniffer mojo talk.

If you don't want to chat with Bill, you can buy 'em new in gold or silver for $344 from The Perfect Note: http://www.tpngear.com/klon.htm

Still too swanky for the likes of me though...

Cheapskates: If you just want a nice clean boost, it's hard to beat the Zoom PD-01. You can still find 'em on ebay for $50-60 bucks. Just okay drive, but set gain to zero and the boost is killer, with a flexible EQ.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 17 September 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

I'm using a Digitech Bad Monkey for boost at the moment. I should add that I'm using it in front of other o/drive pedals for solo boosts and add a bit of extra o/drive at the same time. I haven't personally used it for clean boost, but I've heard that it does this well too.

toadworks meat or barber launch pad - both great and well priced.

i only got my toad b/c i found it pointless to be running a tube amp and not taking advantage of the natural od by running a boost in the chain - some quite nasty savagery thereof.

all my od pedals sucketh at low volume.
