How do you get that Herbert sound?

Does anyone know how Herbert does his amazingly subtle, but instantly identifiable house sound? It's not spikey at all--very "grey" and sounds compressed-ish, but it's very very Herbert. How odd. And cool!

don't be shy with the swing!

Merry
Xmas!
And yeah, Herbert totally swings. But I was more referring to the sound itself--it's very Herbert-y, the production/recording sound, but I'm not sure why that is. It's very identifiable, though. Any ideas?

hmm, I haven't listened closely to his stuff in a long time. Since he follows that manifesto of his (no drum machines, all sounds must be new, relevant to the 'subject'), the sounds tend to be very short and staccato. I also seem to remember the melodic elements sometimes being reverbed whereas the rest was dry. But you already knew all this...

Heehee, but it's good to hear that I'm on the right track--yeah, I'm wondering how he records his manifesto sounds, because even on his remixes, it's distinctly Herbert-y. Very neato. The last thing I want to do is copy him for our band, but since there are so few ppl in electronica with truly distinctive production sounds (Daft Punk, Bent, Herbert, and maybe a few others) that aren't like totally digital electronique (I'm not thinking of Richie Hawtin or Autechre, for example,) it seemed very interesting. Anyone else you'd recommend that we listen to for interesting production values? We're totally tripping on Mitchell Froom, Tchad Blake, T-Bone Burnett, Marius De Vries and Jon Brion as our main production dudes, but we're always looking for more stuff....

Herbert's sound seems more attainable than a lot of other electronic stuff I hear. Record samples from body noises and stuff around the house, chop them into little bits and compress. Add some rhodes and upright bass and presto.

If only... sigh... I definitely think it's the compression--he has this odd way of using it that makes his sound his sound. That and the ubiquitous Rhodes. Sweet Rhodes. Gaaaaah.

Are we talking about Mathew Herbert here? I do hope so, because he/she/it is f*****g ace. Is 'Cafe De Flore' (sic?) an original tune or a cover? Where's he/she/it from?

Sorry, but I keep thinking this thread is about the guy who came down on the space hippies on Star Trek.

Yeah! Herbert R0x0r!!!! He is mos def l337 and pwned all the other l0z3r producerz. I have no idea if Cafe De Flore is an original, but it sure is purty. And Redd, if you've seen a picture of Mr. Herbert-I-have-a-high-forehead, you'd know that he's a Klingon.

two months pass...

I played some Herbert outside on the patio yesterday, and my neighbor, a widow in her 70s, came up to me and said, I really like this! You play some good music!
