Promoting shows

So, my band is doing a large theater gig with four other local bands. I think we/they've been doing pretty well as far as postering, handbills, and getting some things going with the local high schools (it's all ages), but does anyone have any good pulling-out-the-stops promo ideas?

get the show added to the concert calendar of your local college radio station. send your cd to them, try to get it into airplay. offer up a ticket giveaway with them.

also, what press is being written up for the show? do local writers know about it?

I'm assuming someone is sending out press packets, but there hasn't been anything yet (the show is on the 27th). A ticket giveaway is a good idea!

There was discussion of making a compilation cd (ghetto style) and giving some away at record stores, schools, etc., but there were concerns about cost, length, explicit lyrics, etc.

eh, comp cd isnt worth it. just send your cd to local college radio stations and get it added to current rotation! may i ask where this concert is happening?

also, and i know this sounds lame, but have you done any posting on myspace about it?

It's at the Barrymore Theater in Madison, WI.

We don't have a myspace site (I was planning on setting one up when our new cd comes out, which will unfortunately be a few weeks after this show), but I see that at least two of the other bands do. I'll ask them to post something.

Thanks Maria! Is that your real e-mail?

If you're doing a theater gig, it might not hurt to contact some less "hip" outlets like daily newspapers in the area. Also, I've learned that there's nothing wrong with making it clear that you're looking for coverage because of a specific upcoming gig -- in fact papers LIKE to do stories that dovetail nicely with upcoming gigs. It's mutually beneficial.
