Do I need permission of the writer of a song to synchronise a cover version to film?

It's a cover version by my band of a song written by someone else, a company wants to use our version for a film. Do I need to seek permission from the songwriters? Please advise, expert dudes and dudettes.

Technically, you needed permission (or, rather, to pay for rights/royalties) to release it in the first place, yes.
