We advertised for another one, and among the guys who called is the original bassist from, er, eye-queue, shall we say, which I guess is quite a coup for a band playing prog rock covers. After the gig last Friday, the lighting guy, drunk, told me that this new guy happens to come with a keyboard player attached, lighting guy told me that drummer - who sort-of runs the band - had invited attached kybrd player to join in my place, and that I am henceforth to be the band's sound man, drummer having pissed off kim, our current (& excellent) foh engineer to the point where she handed in her notice last week. Drummer, I should point out if it isn't obvious, is an impulsive and thoughtless individual in a lot of ways.
Anyway, drummer came into the shop this am to, as he said "set the record straight", setting the record straight in this instance meaning basically confirming that everything the lighting guy said was true, but he tried to put it in the nice way. When I told him that I wasn't interested in mixing the band, and that I was enjoying the actual playing, a lightbulb seemed to switch on, dimly, in his brain, and he must have realised that his genius plan wasn't quite waterproof after all. The possibility that if a/you tell a band member that they're getting replaced by someone better, but as a consolation prize, they get to be soundman, and b/said band member finds this out because a drunken crew member blabs, then that band member might be a bit annoyed didn't even cross his mind. Amazing. Going on past experience, he's done this unilaterally, so he's going to cop some shit from the singer & guitarist.
Not that it makes any difference now, I'm dropping the van off at his place tonight, and walking away from it all. I've got enough shit with trying to run this place, and with having a mentally ill child, that I don't need anymore. What the fuck, I'm actually quite disgusted by this. Now I don't have to learn that dream theater number anymore, that's an upside, I suppose?
Share yr band politics vents plz.

so yeah I thought I was gonna be in a band, but the frontperson today called the whole thing off
the reason being that although our one (1) practice went really well, and although we all got on, the frontperson wants complete creative control, wants to work in only a duo, and most importantly is now in a different band
fuck this noise
i'm still gonna be in a band, mind, a better one

so a group of ppl got together to start a band, and later the i-am-jenius singer fucked off to do his own thing? what's the problem?
― goole, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)
^^^ this - sounds like the singer saved you the job of firing them - get a new singer
― snoball, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:33 (sixteen years ago)
i-am-jenius singer was also the synth player (and is also female) who's playing bass in a different band and wants a very stripped-down arrangement for her own compositions...wasn't to be.
the problem is that this individual waited a week before getting back to any of us, having been really upbeat after we all last met, and basically dismissed us all very curtly
ah well
can't take nothing for granted
er the rest of the band was brought together by her, and none of us know each other. it's not gonna go anywhere.
― Young Chizzy (country matters), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:35 (sixteen years ago)
so send out an email and get them together again anyway
― goole, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)
not the worst plan
― Young Chizzy (country matters), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)
You've seen "Dead Poets Society", right? I'm not suggesting getting on tables and shouting "oh captain my captain", but presumably these people all still want to be in a band? What do they have to lose? Sounds like the departure of jeniussinger is like losing the weakest link in the chain, as a band you're now in a stronger position than you were before. X number of people who want to be in a band, instead of X+1 people, one of whom doesn't care.

maybe she was hot and it was the only reason everybody showed up
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
yeah but the drummer is really tight and can get hold of cheap practice space easily
hmm

btw the band that i was venting about in the "band meetings" thread broke up, big surprise there.
she was hot y* but the main point of interest was her voiced desire to make creative, unusual music w/o verses or choruses and the fact she'd already stuck some decent demos on myspazz

*also very nice, good fun, totally into literature too *sniff*

Okay picture the scene.
Spent the last couple of years in a band, recording an album, which on around the time of it's completion, our singer's other band start to get loads of attention and subsequently go totally on the ascendant.
Singer now dissappeared into the world of tours and recording sessions with this other band, us left with a cd getting decent press but unable to gig or capitalise. Nobody's fault really and this may sound like spite, but the most galling aspect is the other band are really, really bad (imho)

Was presented with an ultimatum. "If you don't support me in the decisions that I'm making I'm calling off the whole album." At some point the phrase "having a better product on the market" came up which (if you know me) caused me to straight to the nuclear option - um, that's not a path I go down at all. I was described as "being afraid that more than 20 people would listen to it" but principles are principles. Sacking the bass player and bringing in someone new isn't going to fix whatever broken toys you are perceiving. *awaits cricket noises*
