this is really depressing me. i've spent all night trying to convert 2 wav files to mp3 for a myspace upload and every fucking piece of cunty free download software has stitched me up and clogged up my toolbar/hard drive and wasted my whole evening.

i know, peanuts/monkeys etc, but can anyone recomend a decent shareware/trial converter?

for FREE, get EAC (exact audio copy) + the lame encoder. you'll be laughing.

do itunes do mp3s?

Yeah, in Itunes you click on the song and then go up to the advanced menu. Scroll down to "convert selection to AAC" and I think that will do it.

but surely AAC isn't mp3?

o thankyou kind Magi - i was tearing my fucking hair out at the roots back there.

my problem was that i'd been in ableton beefing up some mixes with blockfish and that multiband (all tipped off this board) and had rendered to disk from ableton and the wav files then refused to run in anything other than itunes so the AAC tip was the lifesaver - AAC are MPEG4's so i then needed to do another convert to mp3.

but done. thankyou thankyou all. and so to bed.

Uh, AACs are not MP3s, but iTunes will let you do MP3s for free. (Go to Preferences and then Importing and then switch it from AAC to MP3.) That was one of the big things about iTunes, was that Apple was paying the MP3 licensing fees but giving the software away for free. It killed some of the shareware MP3 converting programs.

And it's free for PC as well, although of course it comes with a bit of overhead with Quicktime and isn't nearly so smooth there. If you have an older computer it might not be the best answer. But it is free, and does convert MP3s!

Ah ha... that makes more sense. I was just stumbling around Itunes trying to convert a wav file the other day and that was the best thing I could come up with.

I do have to point out that LAME's mp3 encoding is a bit better than whatever codec is built into iTunes. I mean, sure, it's subjective, but I can hear a difference, and many others seem to agree...
