Wannabe Startrekman thread: What is the technology behind '80s dancehall?

Digital dancehall hit in, what, 1985?

Anyone know (or have a decent guess) what kind of equipment King Jammy was using on these early tracks? Sounds like everything is digital but the vocals.

I'm trying to think of some other producers along these lines... Winston Riley is the only one that comes to mind.

i have a couple dvd bootlegs of early 80s dancehall footage and one of the things sound systems used alot was the mixer volume slider to cut out the sound after every beat, so its kind of altering the rhythm slightly on the fly.

Holy shit. I had the MT-32, which was almost identical to that. I think. It really brings me back. I figured out Stepping Out by Joe Jackson.

I use a casio very similar to that one that I found in a friends basement years ago. Its great - it makes sounds like a seventies synth, very primitive. You can tweak it up with effects pedals and have total bliss. I haave been using mine a lot lately, especially the sequencing.

Have a listen if you like! (Diamonds in the moolite)

did steely and clevie actually produce any records? if so would love to know which ones.

around the time of prince jammy 'sleng teng' and king tubby 'tempo' era, tubby had a yamaha cs-01, mt-40 and oberheim DMX drum machine in his studio (plus a lot of other digital recording stuff).

one month passes...
Yes Steely and Clevie actually produced records, which is why I named them. They did a little known tune "You Don't Love Me No No No" by Dawn Penn ;] and too many others to mention as these links will attest:

Plus I think they did a bunch in Jammy's studio before setting off on their own.
