What kind of fuzz pedal did they use with this album? Or was it several lined up together? I've been trying to get that level of distortion just by playing simple chords but I haven't come across it yet.

What we know:

- hollow or semi-hollow guitars, incl. Gretsch Tennessean, Gibson ES-330 (feedback!)
- Fender Twin (reverb cranked)
- Shin-Ei Fuzz-Wah

They've been known to use a Proco RAT live.

Original shin-eis are a bit dear, but a decent Si fuzz-face clone should get you a lot of the way there. I haven't tried the Dunlop Hendrix fuzz-wah, so I don't know how close that comes, or even if it's in the same ZIP code.

I thought I'd read that they used Solid State amps on Psychocandy. It sure sounds like it a lot of the time.

I remember reading an interview with them in Musician Magazine (!!!) in about 1986 and they were asked what was the secret to their sound, and they said "Shinei fuzz pedals - we've got the last four of them in the world.!"

Ha, I have a fancy boutique shin-ei clone/turbocharged adaptation, the g.s.wyllie "rising Sun", the JaMC sound connection never occurred to me before, but now that I think about it, it does do that speaker cones tearing as you play noise! I'll plug it in tonight, I think.

That's a fine-lookin's pedal you got there.

I didn't realize there were only 4 left in the world. I should never have sold the one I had...
