SGs

Anyone have an SG? It appears I can pick up a new one at Sam Ash, USA, for about 5 or 600. I almost sprung for a '79 with a Walnut finish, but it was priced a bit high at 900 I thought.

Gibsons best ever design? Great access to upper frets and a pickup selector thats not in the way, unlike Les Paul. Cutting tone with strong mids. Think Angus and some Mick Taylor. Can be a bit neck heavy if body is light, which most are. Actually, I love the light weight. Mostly great pickups standard. I particularly love the P90 on these. Rock raunch dont get much better.

They also convert really easily to headless guitars, whether you want 'em to or not.

Thats fer sure. I kinda like the neck volute on the 7o's models. I'm certain its the only reason my headstock hasnt snapped off when dropped. Gibson guitars definitely wont take the abuse of most Fenders.

Anyone know anything about the SG Special as opposed to Standard? Amazon/Musician's Friend has a lefty one for $850 I'm considering purchasing.

Gibson's site should have details on the Special vs Standard.

two weeks pass...
I've always been a huge SG fan, but the neck on mine (a late 80s Standard reissue) is extremely rubbery & the thing goes out of tune like crazy. I feel like I cant really ROCK OUT because of it. Is this a standard feature of SGs, or reissues, or is it just mine?

I find the tuning pretty stable. But with a neck that long (and the neck joint on some models) ya cant expect the most stable guitar in the universe. So long as ya make sure all the things that can fuck up tuning wise are sorted it should be OK. Something as simple as a badly cut nut or strings installed wrong can turn any guitar into a pain in the ass that yer dont wanna play.

Anyone else have problems with the finish on an SG? Mine is chipping so much it hurts. Then again, maybe it'll end up looking "cool." (Other than that I'm in love with it, btw)
