gifting a song

Ever written a song for some other singer/group - did they do it justice or did you feel cheated when they added the tom-tom rolls and re-phrased the chorus? Did you write to order or was the song already there. If they made it 'their own' did it become less 'yours'?

I haven't (although I so would, I so would) but when people have mucked about with my songs when covering them it's generally made me happy. Esepcially when one band threw in a Super Mario Brothers musical quote. That was nice.

I've written a few country/folky tunes on an unplugged electric guitar and gave them to my friends' synth band to record. I think we both gained from it but at first I was so disappointed that they'd re-phrased/edited lyrics and slowed the tempo because the songs were as I'd envisioned them any more. But now I'm totally sold on the process.

I've got a friend who makes beats using samples and a keyboard. I gave him a CD with some of my stuff on it, and he gave it back to me with all of these beats and cuts and girl background singers and everything.

They weren't really my songs anymore since they had just been fuel to cut up and sample, but it sounded really cool.
