Musicians with an "instructional video" level of technique who we like anyway

I've been really digging Steve Gadd's drumming on Aja, in spite of the fact that he's someone I could easily shoot the shit about with a Sam Ash employee.

I guess Jack DeJohnette is also a guy I like who falls into this category. Who else out there can wow the nerds and still move you?

Yeah, I came to say Gadd as well.

Note that he only has four toms and a few cymbals. I think there might be a correlation.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

He's like the nicest, most humble guy ever as well.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

Did you do some kind of master class with him, Jordan?

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Monday, 20 March 2006 15:59 (nineteen years ago)

No, but he stopped by a show my band played in New Orleans once, and then we ran into him and Larry G0ldings wandering the Jazzfest grounds, checking out bands about an hour before they were supposed to go on with James Taylor.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:02 (nineteen years ago)

I think I read all about Larry G in Hit Me, Fred!

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

He's bad. He's one of my two favorite living organ players, and his trio records w/Bill Stewart and Peter Bernstein are amazing.

The Levon Helm drumming video is a thing of beauty.

nate c (phonetagged), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 18:13 (nineteen years ago)

wow! Sweet...Levon Helm is the coolest dude on Earth.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

He so happy there.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

*looks* so happy

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 22 March 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Don't let that fool you- there's an ornery yang to the yin of that happy face.

Dude. I need that video.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 23 March 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

Dude, if you get it, I'll watch it with you.

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

Uh oh. I think I just made the quoted out of context thread.

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Thursday, 23 March 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

that's probably the only instructional video i could imagine enjoying to watch.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 23 March 2006 02:23 (nineteen years ago)

There is at least one Joe Pass video that is brilliant cause the guy is so nonchalant. He'll call a lick "easy" and then demonstrate using the eight fingers he has on his fretting hand.

If you lived in the NYC area, I'd be all about having an instructional video party.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Haha, drum geek party. Beer, weed, practice pads, Weckl videos.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 March 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Watched some of that Levon Helm video round our drummers this evening. Even for an non-drummer it was really interesting and fun. Especially him playing with another drummer, he seems to be a really down to earth and decent guy who not only has chops (ugh! I hate that word) but knows when to use them - talking about playing in a band as opposed to showing off.
