this was mastered by Brooce Templeton at Magneto Mastering here in Mpls. It sounds good, but I think he might have taken away too much low end for my taste...does this sound like a good mastering job to you? i don't even know anymore...
Any advice/criticism/feedback would be appreciated, esp. about the recording, mix, etc. You can be honest if it sucks and I won't get mad I promise.

The vocal sounds a little weak though. I'm not crazy about the effect on it -- it doesn't really suit the song because the drums and bass are so up front and the vocal kind of sounds like it's coming in over speakerphone. I think maybe the performance could be stronger too but it's hard to tell.

The bottom end sounds fine. Not as low as most, but I like it for that. It gives more of a sense of 'tightness'.

I do agree that the vocals need to be tweaked somehow to highlight the chorus. The drum fill and different bass part aren't enough to announce the chorus. Double tracking or eq'ing the vocals sounds like the way to go without having to go back to the drawing board and re-recording anything. Good song, though. I really like it.

(I agree with everyone else about the vocals)

WRT: the vocals....what we did (for most of the album actually) was ran two tracks of vocals...one direct in to the board, clean type, and then another channel through little guitar amps (i think this one was a really old tiny ampeg transistor)....Um....yeah...this was one of those things that I personally wasn't that in favor of, but other members of the band were really in love w/the amp vocals....It's not like this on every track of the album, but it is used sometimes...I guess I feel a little "vindicated" by yr remarks but at the same time it's sort of a band type decision that's already been hashed out and I just "lost" this one...
This was all recorded on 2-inch tape, pretty much live in the studio, with some guitar overdubs.
We're not really that happy with the mastering job, we're going to remaster this track w/another guy...the guy we did it with, having heard a bunch of other stuff he's done locally, for friends, etc, tends to sort of not favor the low-end...the guy we recorded with sort of did a half-ass "mastering" job in his studio, just compressing it himself, that actually sounds better than the "pro" job....
anyway, thx for the feedback.
