I'm starting a new jam.
Organized, invited, administrated everything from studio bookings to individual players' needs etc...
I'm a mediocre bass player (only 5 years of basic playing..can't solo).
Long story short... one player is really excellent. A natural. He has another band and is basically relaxing at this jam... which is totally cool.. he's a friend and I love the way he plays.
The thing is... we've had only two jams...and every new player that's any good he's schmoozing with them about joining his band.
It's a free world.. but I've done all the work getting everyone there... at least he could wait until we gell as a band before recruiting...
I told him to back off and he's kinda cool with it...
I guess I'm bothered that 1. A "friend" would do that 2. That he's stealing my band with his natural talent... shouldn't he find his own musicians?
What's the band etiquette rules on this stuff?
Just want to play and relax and become good.

stop saying "jam"
also: you are not a mediocre bass player if you've been playing for 5 years and don't solo. you are a GREAT bass player

Is this a 'jam' or are you putting a band together? To me 'jam' implies informal get-together to just 'play stuff' i.e an end in itself.
But then you say that you're putting a band together. Which is it? Do the people that you invite to the 'jam' know what's going on?
To my mind if it's a band situation, then he shouldn't be doing what he's doing, but of course he'll do it anyway behind the scenes, you can't stop it. If it's a jam - then what he's doing is perfectly fine.

Cool. That's probably the issue... I'm being clear in defining what the goal is...
I have and do call it a jam.. because I don't want to scare potential players off with the commitment of a band.. But, in reality it's what I want. More like a formal, closed jam. Not really a band.
So, I'll clarify to those who come that it's a closed jam/band situation, and that the goal is to form a group.
Thanks.. Zizz
