if i want to replace tuning pegs, will any brand fit any guitar or are they guitar-specific where the screw holes have to match up?

no, chances are you'll have to drill new holes.

or you could find out what kind are on your guitar and buy the same kind so they holes match up.

What kind of guitar is it?

ibanez jtk1, the tuning pegs are shitty plastic. rather have standard metal ones but not really necessary. you can't polish a turd anyway

if it plays fairly well and has a nice resonance to it, i'd say, fuck it, spruce it up. do shit to it that you might not want to do to a more pricey guitar. if the tuners are unstable, consider replacing them (but also consider getting a new nut or having your current one filed correctly - it can do wonders for tuning problems).

if you decide to sell it eventually, you can strip it of any hardware or electronics you added and bring it back to stock easily - no one's gonna care about a couple holes on the back of the headstock of a $300 MSRP instrument...and you get to keep the valuables for yourself, or resell.

yeah they do their job and stay in tune, i just don't like the plastic knobs. i've got an electric drill, so maybe i'll fuck with it

Gotohs should be a direct replacement on your Ibinhad.

gotoh rly?

ha ,i don't feel "had" really, it was only $200 and plays/sounds great. it was just carved from the ugly tree

Yeah, the plastic Korean tuners are generally Gotoh copies. But pull one of yours off and take it to the store with you to be sure.
