Any possible problems/side-effects with mixing these pickup types?

I can get a Samarium Cobalt Noiseless bridge pickup for my Tele, any potential problems with running one noiseless and one standard (neck) together? Might seem like a daft question, but just to be on the safe side...

What, like the guitar will blow up? Not likely. If you wire stuff incorrectly, the worst thing that will happen is bad/no sound.

If THAT'S you're question, then I'm gonna get even more snarky. The pick-ups might sound like crap together, or they might not -- but why the hell you wanna install something on your guitar if you don't know what it sounds like? And why ask a bunch of Interweb nutters when God gave you ears to hear and eyes to read spec sheets?

(Non-snarky answer: correct wiring will result in the pick-ups sounding as intended by the manufacturer. They only conceivable problem I can think of would be if the output on the two pick-ups is substantially different -- then you need to see if you can correct with pick-up height (distance to string) or if you need to abandon the idea.)

Oh for fucks sake, Colin. I didn't mean "WILL I LIKE IT"? I KNOW what the SCN sounds like. I have never come across a Tele with one std and one SCN though - hence the question.

Colin, I asked a question - maybe open to misinterpretation, maybe not phrased very well, maybe not the greatest question in the world, but I asked it all the same. You didn't get the question, or thought it was a dumb question, or.....something. (Although how you could think I was asking whether I would *like the sound of it*, I cannot guess.) No, the only problem with having one noiseless and one 'noisey' pickup is that you'll get hum when soloing the noisey pickup. Nothing anymore than you're already used to, though.

Thanks Jamey. The hum is just only a pain when not playing. And even then it's only some venues/rooms. The single SCN seems like a neat solution, since I use the bridge p/u on its own around 90% of the time.

Wow. Looks like I showed up a bit late for all the fun. And to think that this is the only board where I tend to not be a snarky mean-sprited sonofabitch...

The only problems I can think of (outside of tonal mismatch) would be the potential for impedance mismatch between the two pickups, hence the possible volume difference. The SCN is a semi-stacked coil (I'm going to stay out of the nitty-gritty here, because it would be mostly boring) but I believe that it acts in such a way that it will deliver a single coil sort of impedance. Did the pickup come with any potentiometers? If it did, and they are 250K, there shouldn't be a problem. If it didn't, let me know and I'll do some research by calling Fender and asking tech support. Hell, if I have time, I'll do it anyway, because I have a shitton of them coming in, and you won't be the last person to ask this question.

I tried to answer the question as originally posed, with humor ("Might seem like a daft question...") -- and my follow up was meant as humor as well, with the straight answer in parentheses. Ok, bridge position Tele SCN - DC resistance 13.8K, Inductance 4.9 Henries.

Can't find Spec on standards, but the Texas Tele neck - DC 9.5K, Inductance 3.3 Henries.

The short version of this is that you should be fine.

it's worth spending $10 on a cheap iron at radioshack and learning how to solder and wire the pickups up yourself.

there are many many sites that have instructions on how to do this, some better than other. best try google and look for ones with clear schematics, layouts, and pictures!

according to webbers, the pickups it has now are:
• 621 with open coils (black) neck pickup
• 623 with open coils (black) bridge pickup

i guess i would put in silver p-90s or some such. amidumb?

What kind of pickups are the 621/623? If they're humbuckers
(which is what I'm thinking) P-90's wont fit. I know that somebody makes a p-90 in a humbucer sized chassis, but I can't remember who right now.

What might help more is if I knew what kind of guitar it is, which would give me a little more insight into how difficult the wiring harness is going to be to deal with.

By the way, if it's a semi-hollow or hollowbody, you probably want to stop right now...

HB-30's are cool, but rewiring hollowbodys is a total pain in the ass. You have to pull the wires out of either a pickup hole or a f-hole to do the wiring, generally, and even worse, you have to be able to pull all the pots/switches/etc. back into place afterwards. I'll try to do some research on the wiring harness on that guitar and let you know exactly how pain in the ass it will be...

Theoretically, the higher impedence of the bridge pickup VS neck pickup might make the bridge weaker than expected in the mixed position VS each solo.
