One FUZZ to rule them all

There are a lot of boxes out there that folks will say "nail" this or that vintage sound, or offer more versatility (Fuzz Factory, Ultra Fuzz) or more useable tones (Dragon).

But I gotta say, for all y'all mad scientists, this one pretty much takes the cake. It's probably best-suited for recording, but...

I nominate AaronK to build the IMM Edition.

Ooooh... Mr. Nite of Morgen und Nite to thread to explain the physics of how it all works...

I like the kitchen sink approach.

haha that's kind of insane. i would be worried about some serious noise issues with so many circuits like these in one box. those DC meters are kind of ridiculous!

in short, i politely decline your invitation :)

i would add a Rat to this arsenal though. something like that or a D+ seems conspicuously absent.

it's beautiful!

Wise. He's in over $500 in parts alone. (He's been paying retail, I think.)

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa that's insane considering it's looks like mainly a conglomeration of clone designs from tonepad or something. I recognise the knobs and DC panels as Radioshack parts, which are marked up ridiculously compared to say, Mouser (even those are pricey if not in bulk). Looks good in that very well done enclosure though.. It's so fine there's no telling where the money went.

Polysix Bad Battery (cprek), Thursday, 6 April 2006 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, he probably made the pcbs himself too. I cant see how it'd be more than $200 in parts... but those knobs look pricey - they could be as much as $5 each, and the stomp switches could be as much as $10 each.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 6 April 2006 15:35 (nineteen years ago)

I know those machined aluminum knobs go for about $6 a pair.

It doesn't look like he etched more than two of his own PCBs. It looks like he either a) ordered the clone kits with supplied board or b) got a board from pcbexpress or a similar service. Either way that would add up real quick. Especially if he got the kits from the byoc site he mentioned... The Fuzz Face clone alone on that site goes for $75.

And yeah those DP3T stomp switches could be $15 a pop.

then this could also be the least efficient build ever...

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 6 April 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

Metrics like "effiency" or "utility" or even "sanity," don't apply. This is art, dammit!

It's full of stars...

(I mean, I've seen cool rehousings before, but none quite so... singleminded.)
