garageband vs audacity vs ?

I have used Audacity extensively to mix sound files for radio broadcast or djing purposes. I've also messed around with it to manipulate/remix various band recordings I've done at a proper studio, with a fair amount of success.

My bandmate and I have recently started doing home recordings on his Mac laptop using Garageband. It's all his equipment so I haven't had a good chance to screw around with it much, but it seems not quite as useful overall as Audacity. I suggested that we try recording with Audacity which he dismissed immediately because he is a Mac-obsessive and reckons g-band is great.

Can anyone compare the two or recommend something else?

Audacity is lame. I recommend Kristal Audio Engine (kreatives.org). Much better interface, more protools-y, easier to work with. And free.

And windows only.

I have used both Garage Band and Audacity, Garage Band is way ahead. Apple bought Logic years ago, Garage Band is basically Logic 'lite' or Micrologic, as it used to be called.

Audacity is quite humble compared to Garage Band, understandably so, with Garage Band having such an illustrious pedigree (anybody remember C-Lab Creator and Notator from the 80's?).

However, I still use Audacity, because it's freely available, and runs on my iBook as well as my Dell Latitude.

Haven't tried Kristal.
