Lust for pink

So I've been feeling a jones for something in a P90 with a Junior/Special kinda vibe.

I've considered ordering a Johnny Thunders from Japan (note tasty wraparound bridge!)...

Today though, I discovered this. $299 retail new. Tres punkrawk. Am I mad? Or just in love?

Geddit now, before Captain Sensible snaps it up.

For a second I thought that said "DAISY KOCK." You should only buy it if you plan to paint over the name so that it says this.

Doable.

I've got a couple of Daisy Rocks - A 12-string "Retro H" in the same shade of pink, and a "Startdust Elite", which is kinda the big, uh sister of the elite rebel linked to above. Both nice instruments, esp the elite, & amazingly good for the low price I paid. Pickups are weak on both of them - the retro has awful mini-humbuckers, which I'm currently(& laughably, tbh) replacing w/a pair of seymour duncans, the elite has a pair of "duncan designed" covered humbuckers, which are OK, except for being way too bass-heavy - I have to roll the bass tone control way off on my dg-stomp when I'm recording w/it.

So, 1/you'll quite possibly want to replace the pickup if you go for the daisy.

Also, 2/FFS, don't pay list for one, they go for way, way cgeaper than list! I got both of mine for something like 35% off list.

List is $429, so I'm set there with any if the usual online suspects (US). Good catch on the "Duncan Designed" though. As hard as I want to hit it, in the cold light of day I'm prolly better off saving for the yellow.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

$429? Ha. Probably you are better off saving for the yellow, though nb that whenever I've seen daisys in music shops the staff are kind of very less than enthusiastic about them, and you might wind up picking up the pink for next to no money when it closes out, which is how I got my stardust elite, this of course giving me an excuse to post a pic of my very instrument:

the bass-heavy pickups apart, it's an amazingly good instrument in terms of finish, playability etc. It's the guitar I usually pick up first.

Tell me more about Daisy Rocks! I gather they're designed to get younger girls into playing (though you probably kind of have to be a burly tattooed guy to pull the pink heart/flower-shaped ones off onstage), so are they short scale? The basses in particular. Anyone played a Daisy Rock bass?

(I've borrowed a bass but my paws are too small for it, but then would I be laughed offstage - not that I have any real plans to get on one - for a short-scale bass? Do they sound weedy and not deep enough? Or do even Real Bassists have to move their hands just to stretch from fret 2 to fret 5? Should I should start a new short-scale instrument thread and stop derailing this one?)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 13 April 2006 13:25 (nineteen years ago)

To the best of my knowledge they're all basically far-eastern made schecters w/glammy/girly finishes & some unique to the range shapes (the star/heart/butterfly/flower guitars, obv, but also the "tomboy" which appears to be 1/2 telecaster, 1/2 SG).

The heart/flower/butterfly/star-shaped basses are all short-scale, but they do a range of full-scale basses as well. The h/f/b/s-shaped guitars come in regular & short-scale versions. I quite fancy a heart or flower-shaped bass, & I probably would play it onstage (I've used both of my pink guitars onstage already) although I've no idea if they're any good or not. I am a burly guy, as it happens, not tattoed though. The star I don't like, and the butterfly is too much, even for me.

Plenty of people play the Mustang bass.

I would recommend a Fender Musicmaster or a Danelectro Longhorn to you, Rebecca.

By all means no, we should have a Daisy Rock thread!

mods, when you get a chance please retitle as "Lust for pink: TEH OFFICIAL IMM DAISY ROCK THREAD"

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 13 April 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Daisy Rock must be selling some of these guitars, as I have noticed that both Fender and Gibson are putting out models with a similar look and marketing angle.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 13 April 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for your advice, everyone! Didn't mean to imply anything rude about IMMers' appearances, just that my current looks are a bit too middle-aged-woman-ish to rock the pink/baby-blue flower-shaped instruments. I know what my first thoughts would be on seeing someone like me playing something so kitsch and girly...

Anyway, I'd got tempted by the Daisy Rocks because I'd seen a few for 100 or 150 pounds Buy It Now on eBay UK (there are still some there) and I remembered reading good things about them on Pashmina's gear page (great read, by the way), but I just acquired a new midi controller keyboard, so for the next few weeks I will be good and not buy any more gear, or at least bury my tiny attention span in softsynths and not think about basses much. When I do I'll bear in mind the suggestions here, though. Cheers.

Have we not discussed the Hello Kitty strats? Anyway, they rule, as does the Batz Maru bass.

The Gibson Goddess and Vixen models seems a little more, what's the word... misbegotten. They got it right in a consustently conservative Gibson way from a features and styling standpoint, but the "Goddess" and "Vixen" names just ooze cluelessness. Which is to say, someone on the product development side would probably love to strangle someone on the marketing side.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 17 April 2006 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

I like Gibson guitars, but they seem to be a company that has no idea what they are doing. Fender seems to be much more together from a business standpoint for both dealing with customers and shops.

In what way to cheap pieces of shit with cool paintjobs rule? I mean, really? Get one real Strat and put stickers on it!

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

I desperately need to get a 12-string. I was going to get a sparkley Danelectro one, but how is the Daisy Rock 12-string holding up, Pash?

Bernard's Summer Girlfriend (kate), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

The pickups are pretty horrible (I'm swapping them out), apart from that it's great. I notice that Andertons are closing them out on ebay for 149 quid! (argh that I bought mine off andertons on ebay for 199 quid less than 6 months ago) Might be worth checking their store & trying one out if there's one in London?

(that said, you make a good point, except that they're not that shitty, and a real strat would cost more)

rogermexico (rogermexico), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm gonna bet they are that shitty, actually.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

they have one (hello kitty strat) at a local music store. I'd try it out to asses its shittiness or not, but TBH I don't fancy it much. It looks a bit crap.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 08:03 (nineteen years ago)

My first good bass was ALMOST a pink ESP Jazz Bass copy, but I was too slow, and now those early 80s ESPs cost SILLY money. But someday....
