I love Danelectros

Oh, I love guitars, yes I do. I had to talk about mine for forty minutes today! Yes, I can rhapsodise about the differences between Big Muffs and MXR distortions for hours on end. I am officially pathetic.

kate, Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What exactly are those differences? I use a Boss Hyper Fuzz. I like it.

Do you really like Danelectro guitars? What do you like about them? I've never played one but I was talking to someone who did when I was in NY summer 2001. He seemed to think it was a piece of shit.

I love my Hondo hollow body.

danelectros suck ass

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 31 October 2002 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my fancy-ass basses, but I once played an early 60s Danelectro bass (the "dolphin-nose" headstock model) which floated my boat. The reissue Danelectros are good sounding, but poorly made -- I don't know if they'd survive hard touring. But they're cheap and cool-looking.

I use a Z. Vex Wooly Mammoth (http://www.zvex.com). It cost too much, but it sounds like your head is exploding.

Rat > Big Muff

dave q, Thursday, 31 October 2002 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The big muff (at least the old skool russian kind) kicks the RAT's ass down the stairs and out the door. SO much fuzzier. So much warmer and dirtier and chewier. I do not like RATs. Big Muffs make a pure fuzz tone, very dirty, very wild, like your amp is about to explode, fantastic for lead sounds. MXRs have a softer tone, not quite as distorted, but more a warm fuzz overdrive sound, better for rhythm sounds.

My Danny is a reissue, and he sounds good, and he's not poorly made at all. He's survived three very boisterous tours and about to go on a fourth and still sounding and looking fantastic. So I stand by my Danelectros. (Yes, please, can I have an endorsement deal?)

kate, Thursday, 31 October 2002 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the (was it Sovtek?) Russian Big Muff too. Weren/t they made out of tank gearboxes or something? That sounds like complete bollocks now I write it down... I quite like my Boss Super Distortion/Feedbacker pedal but my ex-bandmate stole it.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 1 November 2002 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Point taken about the Russian-made Big Muffs. They fall apart like their empire did tho, but sound great. I got a Danelectro grilled cheese and I thought that not having a pre-amp control wouldn't be an insurmountable drawback but unfortunately, it is.

dave q, Friday, 1 November 2002 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I love my Big Muff. My bf has a rat that roxxx. To each his/her own.
I have a Danelectro Pastrami that's pretty cute, but only for playing at home - not enuff UMPH.
I am still infatuated with my SG-X. I'm sticking by it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 1 November 2002 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrmmm. I've been looking with lust at SG's on Denmark St, but not enough to unfaithful to Danny yet. Though I must say, I'm so tempted by the blueflower Telecaster ...

My friend had a Danelectro bass, it felt so light I thought it may have been made with balsa wood.

The Turbo Rat is a nasty beast, I've got one of them that I use sometimes on my bass (not as much lately as I use a SansAmp). Rats are made like a tank, a friend left one on the top of his car and it flew off going about 40 and other than scratching the paint and putting a couple of dings on the case, it worked fine.

earlnash, Saturday, 16 November 2002 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a turbo rat as well, which I bought in a sale at this musick shop in Newcastle. I like it a lot, esp the tone control, which is almost like a synth filter! Epiphone twin neck thro turbo rat is the most METAL sound I've ever got..... Thee only old electroharmonix boxen I've got are a pair of electric mistress pedals - one standard, which makes everything sound like steve hillage, and one deluxe, which strangeley enough sounds completely different & is a rather nice chorus effect. My mate mark had a big muff pi with a broken switch that sounded like 2 different levels ov fuzz being selected.

i have the tuna melt and grilled cheese danelectro mini pedals. i am happy with them both as a) they are cheap b) they are cute n tiny c) they sound good. i marvel at the expensive gear everyone here has.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 27 November 2002 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I got me one of them real cheap reissue Danos with the built-in effects from a buddy on a whim. I love it!

I mostly love the retro-tuned lipstick pickups...twangy and skanky and plinky and pretty much all my favorite sounds come out of this guitar.

Dang, I wouldn't have thunk Kate such a support of the Big Muff. That pedal is part of me now. I run a signal from my microphone through it mostly these days, it is the best vocal distortion I've ever experienced yet...milky and crunchy and monstrous and creamy and so on...

I too have the old Russian EH/Sovtek variety, mine is beige.

Danelectros are fabulous guitars - sure they are retro but they hardly "suck ass" as someone so eloquently put it above (nice command of the English language you've got there, Bud).

Don't try to play metal on them, that's not really what they are about. But for bright twangy sounds, or distorted buzzsaw rockabilly sounds, they are perfect.

They sound the way they do due to the lipstick tube pickups mounted in a hollow body (plywood frame with hardboard top and back). Yes, the materials are cheap, but it all works so beautifully, so why not?

I used to have a pair of Fenders, which I sold, now I have a pair of Danelectros (amongst other guitars) and I prefer them to the Strat and Tele any day. And if I want to do the heavy stuff, I've got other guitars that will take care of that.

I'd really love a Danelectro guitar. I can't afford anything fancy and they look gorgeous. My jagmaster is cool, but the previous owner was in some rock band so he fitted a bad ass humbucker on the bridge. It's really powerful when distorted but doesn't do clean twang very well. Doesn't matter too much, cos I've got a ricky copy to cover that and the jagmaster sounds lush and Pavementy when I have both pickups on. The bright twangy and rockabilly thing sounds ace - what's a good Dano then?

Love my two Dano pedals. Using the Tuna Melt trem a lot for my band. Tempted by the slap echo too, although I'd rather get hold of a Danecho which does all that and much more.
My old fabtone distortion is a beast. Love it.

I have a Danelectro tuner now. I love them, they're so cute and wee!

The Brocade Fire (kate), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

Dunno why Dano haven't brought out nasty 60s style fuzz pedal. They do everything else, so why not fuzz? It seems such an obvious pedal for them to do. Nevermind, I won a DOD Classic Fuzz on ebay for £18. DODs usually suck but this one, I've been assured, is pretty sweet, going from buzzy sixties fuzz to big muff heaviness.
Their reverse delay sounds cool - get some Kevin Shields sounds out of that...

THE OX PLAYED A DANO

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

Sarah just got a glittery Danolectro bass last weekend, because her old one weighed about 150 pounds and was making her back hurt. It looks and sounds cool!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

God, that is the best thing about those basses, they are the most lightweight buggers on earth! You can play it for hours and hours and not need a massage afterward.

No. I've got an old Danelectro Silvertone and it is a great guitar. Solid. Stays in tune amazingly well. Pickups are great. One of the keys to the thing, I think, is the wood bridge and its effect on the tone.

check out the danelectro french toast mini pedal - it's an octave/distortion pedal. very noisy! (and awesomely cheap)

i have a danelectro baritone guitar that i absolutely love - it's turquoise w/ a sparkly finish. very round sounding and jangly, in a baritone kind of way. tons of sustain, too. the best part is that it was only $200! the one bad thing about it is that it's top heavy, so it tends to swing violently towards the floor when you let go of the neck..
