I googled the Ovation Preacher and I must say it is a nice looking guitar. That is one big honkin' piece of bridge.

If you get a guitar like this and actually play it, then you are already over all of those collectors who just keep them in a case.

There's always someone out there collecting something or other. If you really like the guitar, I can't see why you'd let that stop you. The only bummer is the rising prices if a guitar you'd like to own suddenly becomes collectory.
Anyways, like Earl Nash said, if you are seen with the guitar while playing it, it's unlikely anyone will think you are a collector bore. Most of those guys, even if they can play well, rarely break out their collector pieces to play because they're too fearful of reducing the value by actually using the damn thing.

while they're starting to gain some value, ovation solidbodies are largely thought of as utter trash, especially crud like the Breadwinners. they're one notch up from the Norlin-era Gibsons. (i personally think the GP is beautiful, and the second one pictured is ugly as all get-out). don't think, for a damn second, that anyone is going to think you're some sort of collector-fetishist for even owning one of those, most people that read, say, Vintage Guitar would scoff/bust-a-gut at the thought.
if it sounds good, feels good, by all means.
scoff.

Plus, there was 10% off, so I got it for just over £400. Hurrah!

they like writing about weird moments in guitar history. just because theres an article doesn't make the things collectible, neccesarily. is anything collectible? sure! its true that people are going to sink insane money into almost anything, given ebay and the right amout of hype. but y'all were making it out to be like, something you'd be afraid to take onto stage which is what my point was, that these are far, far, farrr from some holy grail of collecting. 48 no-caster, 52 les paul, 78 ovation... um, not so much. in my humble opinion, paying upwards of 800-1200 for any kind of 70s ovation is insane.
