Ovation Preacher

I have just seen this guitar in the local shop. I think I am in love. It's £450, from 1975 and apparently no longer made anymore. Tell me about this guitar. I had a little play and it seemed to be nice, if not a bit heavy (weight-wise). Is it worth it (£450 seemed expensive for a second-hand one)?

The 70s Ovations solidbodies are well-built, good-playing and sounding guitars (and basses, especially) -- but they've been discovered by collector scum, so they're not the bargains they were 5 years ago. If you like the guitar, that price isn't bad.

Hmmm, I do like the guitar, but am disheartened that people may assume I am some sort of guitar-bore collector.

Josh Homme is a fan of the Ovation GP, it has been his main guitar on and off for years.

I googled the Ovation Preacher and I must say it is a nice looking guitar. That is one big honkin' piece of bridge.

If you get a guitar like this and actually play it, then you are already over all of those collectors who just keep them in a case.

i love those GPs. they're actually korean made, i think, which was sort of novel for anything but bottom of line guitars at the time. and they were priced more than les pauls, and sure as hell are worth more than 70s LPs now. i hear the eastwood reissues are nice, sooner play one of those than some p.o.s. epiphone...

There's always someone out there collecting something or other. If you really like the guitar, I can't see why you'd let that stop you. The only bummer is the rising prices if a guitar you'd like to own suddenly becomes collectory.

Anyways, like Earl Nash said, if you are seen with the guitar while playing it, it's unlikely anyone will think you are a collector bore. Most of those guys, even if they can play well, rarely break out their collector pieces to play because they're too fearful of reducing the value by actually using the damn thing.

Wow, beautiful guitar.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 12 May 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

lets not get ahead of ourselves.

while they're starting to gain some value, ovation solidbodies are largely thought of as utter trash, especially crud like the Breadwinners. they're one notch up from the Norlin-era Gibsons. (i personally think the GP is beautiful, and the second one pictured is ugly as all get-out). don't think, for a damn second, that anyone is going to think you're some sort of collector-fetishist for even owning one of those, most people that read, say, Vintage Guitar would scoff/bust-a-gut at the thought.

if it sounds good, feels good, by all means.

scoff.

That article actually kinda started the buzz about these guitars, and prices have ben rising since. The Magnum basses (which are super nice) have especially gotten really expensive.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 12 May 2006 11:19 (nineteen years ago)

I have purchased it! It's so beautiful!

Plus, there was 10% off, so I got it for just over £400. Hurrah!

they like writing about weird moments in guitar history. just because theres an article doesn't make the things collectible, neccesarily. is anything collectible? sure! its true that people are going to sink insane money into almost anything, given ebay and the right amout of hype. but y'all were making it out to be like, something you'd be afraid to take onto stage which is what my point was, that these are far, far, farrr from some holy grail of collecting. 48 no-caster, 52 les paul, 78 ovation... um, not so much. in my humble opinion, paying upwards of 800-1200 for any kind of 70s ovation is insane.

b mulvey, Friday, 12 May 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

Insane it may be (and I think it is) but the fact of the matter is that prices of 70s solid-body Ovations have gone up a great deal in the last five years, and you'll have a very hard time finding a Magnum bass in 2+ condition for less than $800.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

(And ironically enough, all three articles you cited are about guitars that are now very expensive. You see how this works?)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

The thing about those Ovations is that there was not many of those made. If it plays and sounds good, paying 800-1200 bucks does not seem too much to ask, as if it is kept in good shape, it won't go down in value as the guitar is already 20 years old. Besides that, you would have something to play that is unique and not the same as everyone else.

That Preacher is a good-looking guitar.
