Kind of sick, right before a show

So yeah, we're playing a show tonight that should be cool enough that I don't really want to cancel, but I'm either having a serious allergy attack or coming down with a cold: sore throat, lots of phlegm, you know the deal. I hesitate to resort to Dayquil or other medications because they make me really spacey, to the point where I'd be worried I'd forget all the songs. Any other tips on getting myself at least through tonight?

Ha ha, I thought this was about stage fright, which always makes me really sick before a show.

Drink lots of hot liquids. Peppermint tea with warm honey, that kind of thing. I swear by peppermint tea with honey if my throat is not in great shape.

Two words: lip synch.

Fortunately, my throat seems to have gotten better through the day (which probably points to allergies, not a cold). Now I'm mainly worried about energy level and spitting phlegm everywhere.

Two more words: Hot Tottie.

Nick, I think we are suffering from the same allergic malady. My energy's been low all day, been blowing my nose a lot, etc.

Guys, ignore the negative reviews and the high price and jump in the shower with one of these babies

Lots of water.

Warm liquids, yes, but not piping hot -- they can be irritating.

I've also known many classical singers who swear by Halls (the mentholy ones, not those immune defense thingies).

Also: avoid dairy products, which cause phlegm.

At some point I realized that's why people always recommend tea w/ honey- to avoid the milk (or the citrus from a lemon). I think.

Licorice tea is excellent for vocal cords that are a little harsh. And honey is a good thing. Hot toddy is not a bad idea either.

theres this shit called 'throat coat tea' which you brew for like 15 minutes, it tastes like shit but does wonders for the throat

THAYERS SLIPPERY ELM LOZENGES

DO NOT use anything that medicinally numbs or dulls the throat though -- it might take away the soreness, but it will also numb your vocal chords.

HEY DANJER, REMEMBER WHEN YOU BARFED??

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 22:59 (nineteen years ago)

I felt ok for the show but then inhaled a bunch of smoke afterwords and now I feel like crap. In case you were wondering.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, gbx, i remember

Mark Danjer (Danjer), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

for others' edification, gbx and i's band was playing on the north side of chicago, and between nerves and a bad burger i had at the tastee freez earlier in the day, i was a bit ill. so i pull over into the alleyway to puke, and at the moment i do it, a cop car pulls up right beside me just in time to see it all. then i turn around and realize that, though i thought i was in a dark alley, i was actually in front of this vegetarian restaurant called the heartland cafe, and a party of four eating dinner was like two feet from me through a pane of glass, also staring at me, horrified. i didn't get arrested or anything, it was just kind of gross.

Mark Danjer (Danjer), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:50 (nineteen years ago)

Don't worry, the Heartland used to make me want to puke sometimes, too.
