colelcting mechanical royalties for synchronised soundtracks in the USA

I posted this thread yesterday but it seems to have disappeared - apologies for any replication.

I've been advised (and have subsequently confirmed after a google search) that the Harry Fox Agency doesn't collect mechanicals deriving from synchronisation of soundtrack material to film and DVD etc.

My question is - how do US artists collect their mechanicals from this source - do they apporach film co's or distributors directly? Does this work well? What about o.s. soundtrackers to US films - do we have extra hurdles to go through?
