as a gift, out of the blue. They said it's a '62 - is there anyway to tell if it's an authentic or reissue, and does anyone know how much each of those generally runs for?

Yes to both questions. Before I bother to go further, give a serial number and (no offense) let us know that you aren't a troll.

Uhh...sure...I don't see how this could be a troll post, but anyway...

It's V155115

Sorry. Too many weird things showing up as of late here...

It's a reissue, according to the serial number. Does it have a country of origin label anywhere? (should be USA or Japan)

USA

Excellent. Current retail is $2000, which means that current street price is $1400. Depending on color, condition and accessories (case and case candy, etc.), it's worth about $1000. Certain colors (Sherwood Green in particular) are worth more, others (Sunburst and other standard colors) are worth less. Still, we're only talking about a $100 +/- factor here, at least at this point.

Nice gift, by the way.

when I was buying a Tele, there was some guy in the store talking in hushed tones about some secret promotion that had the Costello Jazzmaster selling at half price -- I couldn't get anything approaching a decent explanation from him, so I tried to just pretend he was crazy as I paid
